About

Puppy Linux is a unique family of Linux distributions meant for the home-user computers. Ready to use, all tools for common daily computing usage already included. Ease of use, grandpa-friendly certified. Relatively small size, 300 MB or less. Fast and versatile. Customizable within minutes, remasters. Different flavours, optimized to support older computers, newer computers. Variety, hundreds of derivatives (“puplets”), one of which will surely meet your needs. Puppy Linux is not a single Linux distribution like Debian. Puppy Linux is also not a Linux distribution with multiple flavours, like Ubuntu (with its variants of Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, etc) though it also comes in flavours. Puppy Linux is a collection of multiple Linux distributions, built on the same shared principles, built using the same set of tools, built on top of a unique set of puppy specific applications and configurations and generally speaking provide consistent behaviours and features.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Fast, light. Support from the forum is very active Easily to be customized. Many puplets to play with: Ubuntu, Debian, Slackware, Void, etc.
  • It's very easy to use. It's fast. It's single user. It has an intuitive interface. It has a wonderful graphical file manager. It's easy to upgrade.

Cons

  • For me, No much cons on Puppy Linux as it is a community work. All work n contribute. It is getting better and better.
  • Rox-filer can crash if there are more than 3,000 files in one folder.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • It installs? Maybe it's easy if you installed all of it, so that it automatically takes you to the GUI with the first boot. I did the minimal install OS on a DVD.

Cons

  • If you get the base OS version, you can't do squat. It's all locked down, even denying permissions to root. And support is very slim compared to Slackware. On Slackware's page, it has tons of basics and step by step instructions for doing things. It's fully operating, running dhclient to get an IP address, while you try that with Rocky, it says command not found, as it does on almost everything. Don't try Xorg -config because, guess what? Command not found. It's raring to go with Slackware, it all WORKS. And I know because I've been using it for more than 15 years. I suppose if you loaded All of Rocky it would work, the full install. But it's apparently ALL or NOTHING with Rocky Linux.
