About

OpenAI Dots are always-on AI agents designed to take ownership of ongoing projects and proactively move work forward between conversations. Powered by GPT-6 Astra, each dot can start with context from a user's ChatGPT memory and use Codex, connected applications, and its own cloud computer to complete tasks. Users can assign a dot a responsibility, specify what it should focus on, and determine which applications and information it can access. Dots can identify next steps, monitor changing information, perform work, and bring completed materials or important decisions back to the user for review. They can support workflows such as financial analysis, presentations, sales evaluations, software development, API migrations, content creation, and project monitoring. Users remain in control through configurable permissions, Custom Rules, approval requirements, action reviews, and the ability to redirect or pause a dot at any time.

About

Tab is a text-based AI assistant for people who want to delegate everyday tasks. Users send requests and files through Messages or WhatsApp, and Tab can use a browser and connected accounts to carry out multi-step jobs. It can research and book travel, call businesses, create or transform documents and media, and help with purchases after the user approves the payment. The assistant reports progress and returns results in the same conversation, remembers context across tasks, and handles reminders and follow-ups. It accepts text, photos, screenshots, PDFs, and videos; group chats can have their own Tab with private details kept outside the group. Account access uses a verified mobile number. Tab is presented as a private beta with a sign-up waitlist.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • What I like most is that it feels less like “using AI” and more like delegating work. I can give a Dot an ongoing objective, let it work across apps and the web, and have it come back when it needs input instead of babysitting every step. The always-on part is the biggest difference. Recurring research, follow-ups, monitoring, admin work, and multi-step workflows make a lot more sense when the agent can keep working after I leave the chat. I also like that each Dot gets its own cloud computer and browser. That gives it a much more complete working environment than a normal chatbot, especially when a task involves websites, files, tools, and multiple systems.

Cons

  • The downside is that something this capable needs careful permissions. I would be conservative about local computer access, sensitive accounts, external messages, and anything destructive until I was comfortable with the rules and approval flow.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • What I like most is how little friction there is. I can just text Tab the same way I would text an assistant and ask it to actually get something done instead of giving me a list of instructions. The computer-use side is where it gets really useful. Tab can open websites, work with connected accounts, create files, make phone calls, and keep working after I leave the conversation. That makes it useful for things like reservations, travel changes, purchases, research, and random admin tasks that normally eat up time. I also like the payment approval flow. Tab can prepare a purchase or booking, but I still see the exact amount and recipient before anything gets paid.

Cons

  • The main downside is that I would still be careful about how much access I give it. Tab has clearly thought about security — credentials and payment details are kept outside the normal AI context, and uncertain actions are supposed to stop rather than repeat automatically — but an agent this capable still deserves supervision.
