Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Can do everything you want and more. The greatest piece of open source software I know. Nothing bad to say about it.
  • I mainly use this for live streaming on Twitch and YouTube. I love the fact that it is free to use and for me it is the best software to use for anyone who is looking to live stream or record. It is also great for those people who do podcasts.
  • Has many features like adding input and output. Free software with these features. Available on multiple OS Windows, Mac and Linux.
  • -They have a very clear tutorial on their website -Once you have everything set up, it is very easy to use the exact same settings by saving profiles and scenes -Automatically exports your videos to a folder you choose -Very versatile in usage -It's free
  • Highly customizable - You can install plugins, and edit OBS as you like. Open source. Totally free - you don't need to pay a single penny. Integration with streaming services (Twitch, YouTube, etc.)

Cons

  • Nothing bad to say about it, really. The documentation and error handling could be improved, but given some time they probably will.
  • I do not think it is the easiest software to adjust to and there is a slight learning curve but once I took the time to learn all the features and how to use them it became the perfect software for me. I also think it lacks features that allow for people to easily set up their live streams.
  • Bad user interface. Hard to use. Very heavy on CPU and GPU.
  • -Learning curve -It's a very heavy software, so not every computer can handle running OBS and getting smooth results
  • No cons for me, at least. I haven't found any issues.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • First off, there is an Error in this comparison description. vMix is not made or affiliated in any way with NewTek. That being said vMix is the premiere new kid on the block that have raised the bar significantly for everyone else, including NewTek. (although NewTek is mainly a hardware solution with software) vMix has excelled in newer, popular features and seems to be coming out with more features every six months or so. I see how all the "Old-School" companies are bad-mouthing vMix as being "just a toy" because they are genuinely scared of losing their clientele to vMix... as they should be. vMix has boldly added just about everything, but the kitchen sink, and they don't apologize for it. Everything it does, it does well, or at least pretty darned well. Their integration of dedicated Call-In features along with NDI & SRT support is notably featured and it all comes at an affordable price.

Cons

  • It's hard to post cons as I really really had to think hard to come up with a couple aspects that I honestly think they might be taken as trite points. vMix's User Interface feels a little clunky making the learning curve just a bit harder than it has to be. The program writers who designed this platform are obviously not seasoned Professional Content Producers (as seen in their own sales and weekly promotional pieces). This leaves us with a kind of "Computer-Geeky made" software that does not always fit in the "traditional" production environment that we're comfortably used to. That's not to say that there aren't work-a-rounds and/or newer ways to skin a cat. Also, there are a few features that any professional would think should have been obvious and included, that for the life of me, I can't understand that after many many feature requests, the nice fella's down under just don't seem to implement or even entertain the thought of adding certain features. One, for example would be some sort of a waiting "Green" room for the Call-In folks. Whoever comes up with this protocol first IMHO is going to instantly garner the whole market... like overnight.
