About

If we're being honest, Mac apps are a bit of a lost art. There are great reasons to make cross-platform apps — to start, they're cross-platform — but it's just not who we are. Founded as a Mac software company in 1997, our joy at Panic comes from building things that feel truly, well, Mac-like. Long ago, we created Coda, an all-in-one Mac web editor that broke new ground. But when we started work on Nova, we looked at where the web was today, and where we needed to be. It was time for a fresh start. It all starts with our first-class text-editor. It's new, hyper-fast, and flexible, with all the features you want: smart autocomplete, multiple cursors, a Minimap, editor overscroll, tag pairs and brackets, and way, way more. For the curious, Nova has built-in support for CoffeeScript, CSS, Diff, ERB, Haml, HTML, INI, JavaScript, JSON, JSX, Less, Lua, Markdown, Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby, Sass, SCSS, Smarty, SQL, TSX, TypeScript, XML, and YAML.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • i cant say that i like it or it is likable or that anyone would like it or that its likable.

Cons

  • First off (Download a torrent of Nova and use that. It is not worth a 100 dollars and a bigger reason why is that not only do you have to pay 100 dollars to start , you dont get free updates. You have to pay for those yearly!! Second Reason, they are deceptive with theirmarketing the edtior as if its some grand piece of eye candy! The themes that are available and im not joking 90%of themlookthrown together and look terrible. You would sware that whoever wrote the them was colorblind. How do you put #fe65df over a bright blue background and think that looks good!! And the syntax highlighting system is css based and DOES NOT support semantic tokens period. They have no live preview, themes are hard to learn to build and dont do the syntxthe right justice.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • I have used Visual Studio Code mainly for automation scripting and day to day code updates and I like that it is lightweight, easy to navigate, and supports useful extensions. It makes it convenient to manage scripts, terminal commands and quick debugging in one place
  • Lightweight and very fast Excellent extensions for HTML, CSS, JSON, schema, Markdown Makes debugging tracking scripts much easier Powerful search across folders and files Free and works smoothly even on low systems
  • Linux, macOS, and Windows are among the operating systems that Visual Studio Code (VS Code) is compatible with. Its cross-platform compatibility makes it a flexible option for developers working in various contexts.
  • 1. It has an excellent set of tools for debugging and testing the code. 2. It can be customized heavily from the settings or from the configuration files. 3. Furthermore, it has a lot of extensions available on the extension store to increase the features and functionality of the code editor. 4. It supports all the major programming languages and frameworks. 5. It is extremely light on the system.
  • Best free IDE that i have used so far. It is very light weight in terms of memory utilisation and works smooth on my Mac Book PRO. I really like the window splitting feature and renaming my terminal tabs. I can run my different environments in different named tabs.

Cons

  • One issue I have seen is that it can slow down a bit when too many extensions are installed or when the project becomes large
  • Slight learning curve if you’ve never seen code editors Too many extensions can become confusing Not beginner-friendly on day one without YouTube help
  • VS Code could be thought to be less efficient for really big projects when compared to more complex IDEs. Nevertheless, the size and complexity of any project will determine this.
  • It does not have dedicated build tools available on the options and to use that the user has to use command in the terminal.
  • Although the features are great, one feature that i really miss out on this IDE is the use of GIT. E.g. if it does not support a GUI to resolve merge conflicts. It is handy for updating the repo but not that flexible for resolving conflicts.
