About

Hermes Agent by Nous Research is an open-source autonomous AI agent designed to run locally on your server and improve over time. It operates independently from traditional chatbots by maintaining persistent memory and learning from past interactions. The agent can integrate with multiple platforms such as Slack, Discord, Telegram, and WhatsApp through a unified gateway. Hermes supports automation tasks like scheduling reports, managing workflows, and executing commands using natural language. It also enables parallel task execution through subagents, improving efficiency for complex operations. With built-in tools for web browsing, search, and code execution, it provides a versatile environment for various tasks. Overall, Hermes Agent acts as a continuously evolving AI system that adapts to user needs and workflows.

About

Tab is a text-based AI assistant for people who want to delegate everyday tasks. Users send requests and files through Messages or WhatsApp, and Tab can use a browser and connected accounts to carry out multi-step jobs. It can research and book travel, call businesses, create or transform documents and media, and help with purchases after the user approves the payment. The assistant reports progress and returns results in the same conversation, remembers context across tasks, and handles reminders and follow-ups. It accepts text, photos, screenshots, PDFs, and videos; group chats can have their own Tab with private details kept outside the group. Account access uses a verified mobile number. Tab is presented as a private beta with a sign-up waitlist.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Hermes Agent is really interesting from a developer’s point of view because it feels like a real agent framework instead of another chatbot wrapper. I like that it has persistent memory, reusable skills, tool use, cron jobs, and messaging integrations built around the idea of an agent that keeps improving over time. The open-source MIT license is a big plus. As a developer, I want to inspect the code, self-host it, modify the runtime, and understand how the agent is making decisions instead of depending completely on a closed platform. The self-improving skills system is the most exciting part. If Hermes can actually turn repeated workflows into reusable skills, that makes it much more useful for long-term automation, personal agents, dev workflows, research tasks, and ops work. I also like that it can run across terminal, desktop, cloud, and messaging channels. That makes it feel closer to a persistent digital teammate than a tab I have to keep open.

Cons

  • The power also creates risk. Recent security reporting says Hermes Agent has already been abused in real-world intrusion activity when operators ran it with minimal supervision, which is a reminder that autonomous agents need tight permissions, logging, and human review. It is also probably not the best starting point for casual users. To get the most out of Hermes, you need to be comfortable with setup, self-hosting decisions, access control, model choices, and deciding exactly what the agent should be allowed to do. I would be careful with anything involving credentials, production systems, customer data, or destructive actions. Hermes looks powerful, but it should be treated like a junior employee with limited permissions, not like a fully trusted autonomous operator.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • What I like most is how little friction there is. I can just text Tab the same way I would text an assistant and ask it to actually get something done instead of giving me a list of instructions. The computer-use side is where it gets really useful. Tab can open websites, work with connected accounts, create files, make phone calls, and keep working after I leave the conversation. That makes it useful for things like reservations, travel changes, purchases, research, and random admin tasks that normally eat up time. I also like the payment approval flow. Tab can prepare a purchase or booking, but I still see the exact amount and recipient before anything gets paid.

Cons

  • The main downside is that I would still be careful about how much access I give it. Tab has clearly thought about security — credentials and payment details are kept outside the normal AI context, and uncertain actions are supposed to stop rather than repeat automatically — but an agent this capable still deserves supervision.
