About

Hermes Agent by Nous Research is an open-source autonomous AI agent designed to run locally on your server and improve over time. It operates independently from traditional chatbots by maintaining persistent memory and learning from past interactions. The agent can integrate with multiple platforms such as Slack, Discord, Telegram, and WhatsApp through a unified gateway. Hermes supports automation tasks like scheduling reports, managing workflows, and executing commands using natural language. It also enables parallel task execution through subagents, improving efficiency for complex operations. With built-in tools for web browsing, search, and code execution, it provides a versatile environment for various tasks. Overall, Hermes Agent acts as a continuously evolving AI system that adapts to user needs and workflows.

About

Reasonix is an open source coding agent designed for long autonomous sessions that remain readable, auditable, and reversible. One local engine powers four interfaces: terminal, desktop app, browser, and ACP-compatible editors, with sessions, permissions, skills, and MCP servers shared across them. Plan mode holds every write until the proposed steps are reviewed and approved, while reads, writes, and shell commands are separately gated and constrained by a workspace sandbox. Each turn creates a checkpoint outside Git, allowing users to rewind a long run without affecting commit history. MCP support over stdio, SSE, and streamable HTTP merges external tools into one registry, while Markdown skills and isolated subagents extend the agent without requiring a fork. Reasonix maps a codebase once and keeps that map throughout the session, letting users queue tasks, review diffs, and resume work without losing context.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Hermes Agent is really interesting from a developer’s point of view because it feels like a real agent framework instead of another chatbot wrapper. I like that it has persistent memory, reusable skills, tool use, cron jobs, and messaging integrations built around the idea of an agent that keeps improving over time. The open-source MIT license is a big plus. As a developer, I want to inspect the code, self-host it, modify the runtime, and understand how the agent is making decisions instead of depending completely on a closed platform. The self-improving skills system is the most exciting part. If Hermes can actually turn repeated workflows into reusable skills, that makes it much more useful for long-term automation, personal agents, dev workflows, research tasks, and ops work. I also like that it can run across terminal, desktop, cloud, and messaging channels. That makes it feel closer to a persistent digital teammate than a tab I have to keep open.

Cons

  • The power also creates risk. Recent security reporting says Hermes Agent has already been abused in real-world intrusion activity when operators ran it with minimal supervision, which is a reminder that autonomous agents need tight permissions, logging, and human review. It is also probably not the best starting point for casual users. To get the most out of Hermes, you need to be comfortable with setup, self-hosting decisions, access control, model choices, and deciding exactly what the agent should be allowed to do. I would be careful with anything involving credentials, production systems, customer data, or destructive actions. Hermes looks powerful, but it should be treated like a junior employee with limited permissions, not like a fully trusted autonomous operator.
