About

The Fink project wants to bring the full world of Unix open source software to Darwin and Mac OS X. We modify Unix software so that it compiles and runs on Mac OS X ("port" it) and make it available for download as a coherent distribution. Fink uses Debian tools like dpkg and apt-get to provide powerful binary package management. You can choose whether you want to download precompiled binary packages or build everything from source. The project offers precompiled binary packages as well as a fully automated build-from-source system. Mac OS X includes only a basic set of command-line tools. Fink brings you enhancements for these tools as well as a selection of graphical applications developed for Linux and other Unix variants. With Fink the compile process is fully automated; you'll never have to worry about Makefiles or configure scripts and their parameters again. The dependency system automatically takes care that all required libraries are present.

About

Void is a general purpose operating system, based on the monolithic Linux kernel. Its package system allows you to quickly install, update and remove software; software is provided in binary packages or can be built directly from sources with the help of the XBPS source packages collection. It is available for a variety of platforms. Software packages can be built natively or cross compiled through the XBPS source packages collection. Unlike trillions of other existing distros, Void is not a modification of an existing distribution. Void's package manager and build system have been written from scratch. Void Linux supports both the musl and GNU libc implementations, patching incompatible software when necessary and working with upstream developers to improve the correctness and portability of their projects.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • -Cutting edge -XPBS installer is easy to learn as it follows Arch's Pacman commands closely -RunIt init system instead of SystemD. - Can install via Calimares or CMD - Musl or Glibc
  • I used 3-4 years Arc Linux by the way. Then I decided to use Void Linux. It is fast, rolling release and stable.

Cons

  • -No AUR -New distro=less programs -Musl isn't standard in Linux,BSD or Microsoft, it's the future but software programmers need to catch up to the new ways, as it's superior by a LARGE MARGIN.
  • Not famous as much as Arch Linux which deserves more. For that why sometimes you may face lack of documentary but if you have a general Linux knowledge you may overcome all problems.
