About

DevPod is an open source tool for creating and managing reproducible developer environments as code without a heavyweight server-side setup. It uses the open devcontainer.json standard to define each workspace, so projects can carry their development environment with them and deliver a consistent experience across teams. Workspaces run in separate containers and can be created on a local laptop, a reachable remote machine, a Kubernetes cluster, or public and private cloud infrastructure through DevPod providers. Developers can switch between local and cloud-powered environments while managing every workspace in the same way. DevPod is client-only and available as both a desktop application and a programmable CLI, with no backend service required. It works with public and private Git repositories, supports any programming language, and can automatically analyze projects and create a best-estimate environment when no devcontainer configuration is present.

About

What is Podman? Podman is a daemonless container engine for developing, managing, and running OCI Containers on your Linux System. Containers can either be run as root or in rootless mode. Simply put: alias docker=podman. Manage pods, containers, and container images. Supporting docker swarm. We believe that Kubernetes is the defacto standard for composing Pods and for orchestrating containers, making Kubernetes YAML a defacto standard file format. Hence, Podman allows the creation and execution of Pods from a Kubernetes YAML file (see podman-play-kube). Podman can also generate Kubernetes YAML based on a container or Pod (see podman-generate-kube), which allows for an easy transition from a local development environment to a production Kubernetes cluster.
