About

PhotoCraft is a free, open-source raster image editor for photographers, digital artists, designers, and other creative users. It provides layers, masks, adjustment layers, layer styles, text, vector tools, and brushes in a native desktop application, with a WebAssembly build that can be hosted separately. Users can make non-destructive edits with adjustment layers and live-preview filters, select subjects and objects on-device, and refine masks locally. The editor opens and saves layered PSD and PSB documents, supports smart objects and smart filters, and includes color-management tools for RGB, CMYK, Lab, and grayscale documents at 8-, 16-, and 32-bit depths. PhotoCraft is available for macOS, Windows, and Linux, and is distributed as free, open-source software.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Flexibility and Control! Craft CMS provides the flexibility to create custom digital experiences on the web. It allows developers to design and develop exactly what they need, without wrestling with pre-defined themes. Users can write and design their own HTML, create custom templates with clean code powered by Twig, and manage multiple sites or use Craft as a content API. Ease of Content Management! Craft CMS makes it incredibly easy to manage content, putting the focus on content creation and management. This is in contrast to some other CMS platforms where content management can be more challenging. Active and Supportive Community! Craft CMS has an ever-growing and extremely active community, which can be beneficial for getting support, sharing knowledge, and finding resources Quality and Security: Craft CMS is known for its quality, security, and scalability. It is regularly updated with improvements, bug fixes, and developer support, and it allows for the installation of additional libraries and custom functionality through plugins and Composer. Customization and Multilingual Support! Craft CMS offers full freedom in the design of templates, strict separation of content from structure, and built-in support for multilingual websites. It allows for the development of tailor-made content and provides an awesome, customizable dashboard. Performance and Speed: Craft CMS is recognized for its fast development of tailor-made content, great admin interface, and the use of proven technologies like PHP, Yii, Twig, and MySQL or PostgreSQL, which contribute to its performance and stability.

Cons

  • Craft CMS may require more effort to convince stakeholders to use, as it is not as well-known as WordPress or Typo3.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • It had a nice familiar UI. It looks like Photoshop. That's the goal, and they achieved that. It's a good design.
  • What I like most is that it feels familiar immediately. The layout, tools, shortcuts, layers, masks, adjustment layers, and PSD workflow are close enough to traditional professional image editors that there is almost no learning curve. The performance is another big plus. PhotoCraft is written natively in Rust and uses the GPU instead of wrapping everything in Electron, so the whole app feels much more lightweight than I expected.

Cons

  • Everything else. It's barely more useful than MS Paint, and only because it has layers. You're better off with basically any other free raster editor with an actual developer behind it.
  • The main downside is that it is still early alpha. There are still some tools, advanced typography features, generative AI capabilities, and plugin compatibility on the roadmap, so it is not a complete Photoshop replacement yet.
