About

Code Browser is a folding text editor for Linux and Windows, designed to hierarchically structure any kind of text file and especially source code. It makes navigation through source code faster and easier. Code Browser is especially designed to keep a good overview of the code of large projects, but is also useful for a simple CSS file. Ideal if you are fed up of having to scroll through thousands of lines of code. It supports syntax highlighting for all major languages and custom syntax highlighting can also be added. Although Code Browser was initially designed to edit programs, it can also be used for different tasks such as plain text outlining or helping to understand existing source code. I've added a page with suggestions to take advantage of folding.

About

UltraEdit is a text and code editor built for work that general-purpose editors often struggle with: large files, complex data manipulation, and security-sensitive workflows. It has been in the market for more than 30 years, is used by over 4 million users worldwide, and is trusted by enterprise customers across the Fortune 100, 500, and 1000. Individual users choose UltraEdit when everyday editors start to hit their limits. Common use cases include working with very large files, running advanced search and replace, using column and block editing, and handling more complex text and data manipulation. Organizations choose UltraEdit when they need a more secure and supportable editor behind sensitive workflows. That includes teams in banking, insurance, healthcare, government, and other regulated or risk-sensitive environments where unsupported tools can create too much uncertainty.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • This is how life with Code Browser is: Start writing code Initialization Globals Main loop to do requested tasks Opening screen Do task A Do task B ...etc. Each of the above is a link to an entire tree of code going as deep as you need. When it's been three years since you've looked at this source and you need to add a feature to task B, look how easy it is to find your way to the place you need! Code Browser is the only editor that lets you create your own hierarchy just the way you want it, just the way you think, no troubles. No other editor lets you do this. Every other editor wants to decide for you what gets folded and what doesn't (usually by looking at the code itself...but code isn't how ANYONE outlines and solves programming problems).

Cons

  • No one you know is using this wonderful program or has even heard of it. Everything about the program depends on one guy who wrote this editor in a language that no one (except him) uses. So, you get what you get.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Does all that you want and need in an editor. Handles huge files search and replace, different filetypes etc.
  • Customizable User Interface. Great for any text editing & manipulation. Supports code formatting for all major languages. Built-in File comparison tool. Macro recording feature for automating tasks. Available across platforms & operating systems.

Cons

  • Too many updates, other than that it is great, they do not need to make all those updates.
  • No free version but they do offer a 30 day trial period. Takes some time to get used to due to overwhelming number of features.
