About

Traditional word processors include dozens of options for formatting text, distracting you from what really matters, writing. Calmly Writer is an editor designed to focus on what you want to tell, with a simple, unobtrusive, and easy-to-use user interface. Calmly Writer has been designed to help you focus on writing. As you start typing, all the distracting options disappear from the user interface. The "focus mode" option highlights only the paragraph you are editing at the time. Format your text simply by selecting and clicking on the desired style. If you prefer, you can also do it with keyboard shortcuts or markdown. As long as you do not close a document tab, that document will be opened every time you start the application. If the document was not saved, its backup will be loaded. Calmly Writer displays the number of words and characters written, and allows you to set a target. You can choose between light, dark, dark blue, dune and old-school mode.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Calmly is like a markdown editor (sort of?) for writers. I still don't get what all the hype is about with markdown. I get that pure text files will still be readable post-apocalypse as long as one computer exists (or whatever that crowd goes on and on about) but beyond that? It's quick and "easy" to format if you learn a lot of new shortcuts/syntax, taking of valuable brain space better spent on things related to actually writing. Back to Calmly: It's pretty! Well, mine is. You can set yours however you want, but mine is a deep navy background with an orchid purple font. Don't ask me how this isn't distracting, it just isn't. Granted, this is the paid-for (very cheap!) desktop version, not the free web version, so it has more customization options. It is somehow actually soothing. I'm a stress-writer. And eater. And, well, I'm sure you get the point. I write when I'm stressed and writing ([well] or trying to, anyway) stresses me out. But I don't see or feel any of the noise when I'm using Calmly. There's no risk to using the free web version, forever or just to try, unless that is, you don't want to replace your current writer/editor. In which case, what are you doing here?!
  • N/A.

Cons

  • The person who reviewed before me didn't know what they were talking about, so I guess that's a con that's not at all the fault of Calmly. I bought this software in November 2022 and did not get charged at all beyond the first time. Make sure you're signing up for the right stuff, read the fine print, don't go to crappy websites, use an adblocker and don't click shady links, and run MalwareBytes, because you (dear other reviewer) clearly have something else going on.
  • All one can find is information about a one time fee. Thereafter they draw $30 from your account monthly.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • It doesn't need the internet, and it's free. The editing tools are the main attraction, IMO. If you are trying to avoid AI tools, it has a bunch of great monitoring tools that are not AI, similar to ProWritingAid or Hemingway. Shows a list of your word and phrase repetitions, all adverbs you used, redundancies, misused words, homonyms, "new" and "knew", "less than" and "fewer than" shows a list of your cliches, dialogue tags, proper nouns, acronyms, risque words and phrases, all words and phrases used to begin sentences. Shows extra-long sentences. Shows all the punctuations you used, etc, etc
  • At first I was quite pleased with it design, workflow, easy to get to know it. I got into developing and creating a story pretty easily.

Cons

  • I wish it exported to HTML. It's rarely updated (but it's still easy to find).
  • 8 days later, suddenly all text from every single scene, and I mean all = 100%, had vanished. Characters were still there, but what to do, when all the flesh has left? No copy or saved files could be opened or reopened and if only the emptied project was there. Hours went on and that was it. I could not retrieve a single word. I should have copied every line to whatever text program and save it elsewhere.
