About

Free, open source, cross-platform audio software. Audacity is an easy-to-use, multi-track audio editor and recorder for Windows, macOS, GNU/Linux and other operating systems. Developed by a group of volunteers as open source. Audacity can record live audio through a microphone or mixer, or digitize recordings from other media. Import, edit, and combine sound files. Export your recordings in many different file formats, including multiple files at once. Supports 16-bit, 24-bit and 32-bit. Sample rates and formats are converted using high-quality resampling and dithering. Support for LADSPA, LV2, Nyquist, VST and Audio Unit effect plug-ins. Nyquist effects can be easily modified in a text editor – or you can even write your own plug-in. Easy editing with Cut, Copy, Paste and Delete. Also unlimited sequential Undo (and Redo) in the session to go back any number of steps. Real-time preview of LADSPA, LV2, VST and Audio Unit (macOS) effects. Plug-in Manager handles plug-in installation.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Audacity is sufficiently capable to do what I need to do for recording and processing a daily radio broadcast. The features I need are not so overshadowed with complications that they are difficult to use.
  • Free to use. Simple interface. Lots of options for audio recording and editing. Lightweight - low memory consumption. Available across Linux , macOS and Windows.
  • I've used Audacity for years and it has become my go to application when I need to record, edit, or in any other way change an audio recording. There is many feature and filters which gives this more power then many other pay products. For sure this is worth checking out.
  • • UI isn't complicated • Has some built in audio editing features • Easy-to-configure input and output settings • Supports VST and Nyquist plugins
  • Really easy to use for basic recording. But also with a ton of features to make your recordings perfect.

Cons

  • Beginning with v3.2 the linux version took a real performance hit. The time to process things like normalize, compressor, noise reduction, and Export to mp3 run substantially slower. Also with v3.2 when the track exceeds the width of the window, there is no slider at the bottom until the window is resized. The slider should automatically appear when needed. It has not been fixed with v.3.3 The worst thing is changes to the UI. I have used Audacity for many years and am very accustomed to the location of buttons on the forms. Starting with v3.2 buttons on many of the Effects forms have been both renamed and moved from the bottom of the form to the top. Grrrr! It is one thing to rename a button from OK to Apply. But when the button location is moved, that is a real no-no. It slows me down, is frustrating, and serves no useful purpose.
  • The interface could be improved - it looks like an early 2000's software.
  • I'm not a huge audio person so I only can say it worked for what I needed it for. I haven't found any cons as of yet.
  • • Requires plugins before using some specific audio formats (mp3, m4a, etc.) • Can't have an audio monitor • Lacks certain features
  • Even though I've used Audacity for a while, I still don't really know how to use half the things it does, so it could be overwhelming for some.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • I really cannot say anything good about Cleanfeed. All my hopes were not realized. The hope was based on the reputation for quality audio capture, however, even that was lacking.
  • Easy to use on both sides as you only need to send a link to the other person. Also it looks really simple (good).
  • This software is one of the best I have ever used. Crisp, clear sound with no interference or interruptions. Perfect for interviews and podcasts. I highly recommend!
  • No software or downloads required - runs on a wide range of browsers, easily shared with clients who can use almost any device from laptop microphone to full studio setup, ability to split and record each remote input individually, insanely low latency, adjustable settings for quality etc, simple and easy interface
  • Guests can join via smartphone, laptop, PC or table. Vey good sound quality. Easy to use during recordings. Clear interface.

Cons

  • I was hopeful having moved over from a competitor, however, Cleanfeed cost me an entire interview: one track had me as the host and my guest audio is captured for the first 5 minutes on their track, then it drops to no data. The echo that is mentioned multiple times by others is a nightmare in post. And the interface itself is clunky and poorly designed. When I was recording the aforementioned session, each track read throughout the interview as receiving and recording; however, getting the tracks into post proved otherwise. Their master "Clips" file, as well, does not save you should there be a failure in the individual tracks.
  • Could not work out how to remove echo, even with everyone using headphones and mics.
  • To be honest I haven’t encountered any part that I am unhappy with.
  • Nothing.
  • The echo. There is no echo cancelation and it's the deal breaker. You juts never know when it is going to pop up. It's a terrible issue because you spend valuable time trying to correct it and it's hugely embarrassing when you have guests. They have a so-called help sheet on their website but all it seems to indicate is that they cannot help you. they suggest options to try but when none work, you're on your own. Instead of trying to blame you, maybe the creators of Cleanfeed should just install echo cancellation. It is also unreliable with connections. Some guests I have had were not able to connect. they joined the feed but either couldn't hear me or I couldn't hear them.
