Free, open source, cross-platform audio software. Audacity is an easy-to-use, multi-track audio editor and recorder for Windows, macOS, GNU/Linux and other operating systems. Developed by a group of volunteers as open source. Audacity can record live audio through a microphone or mixer, or digitize recordings from other media. Import, edit, and combine sound files. Export your recordings in many different file formats, including multiple files at once. Supports 16-bit, 24-bit and 32-bit. Sample rates and formats are converted using high-quality resampling and dithering. Support for LADSPA, LV2, Nyquist, VST and Audio Unit effect plug-ins. Nyquist effects can be easily modified in a text editor – or you can even write your own plug-in. Easy editing with Cut, Copy, Paste and Delete. Also unlimited sequential Undo (and Redo) in the session to go back any number of steps. Real-time preview of LADSPA, LV2, VST and Audio Unit (macOS) effects. Plug-in Manager handles plug-in installation.

BeatMaker 3 is a comprehensive music production app that combines the power of traditional desktop software and hardware into a single, intuitive audio and MIDI workstation. It offers a streamlined workflow for performing, recording, and shaping musical ideas efficiently. Users can create and customize instruments with up to 128 banks of 128 pads, each functioning as a full-fledged instrument. The app includes a state-of-the-art sampling engine with modulation and layering capabilities, as well as ZPlane’s Elastique for live stretch and pitch shift. BeatMaker 3 supports integration with external synth and effect apps through full AUv3 and IAA support. Its classic timeline-based pattern and song editor, along with the flexible scene mode, facilitate precise sequencing and remixing opportunities. The app also features a modern mixing board with multi-channel recording, input/output routing, unlimited effects per track and pad, and up to 8 sends.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Audacity is sufficiently capable to do what I need to do for recording and processing a daily radio broadcast. The features I need are not so overshadowed with complications that they are difficult to use.
  • Free to use. Simple interface. Lots of options for audio recording and editing. Lightweight - low memory consumption. Available across Linux , macOS and Windows.
  • I've used Audacity for years and it has become my go to application when I need to record, edit, or in any other way change an audio recording. There is many feature and filters which gives this more power then many other pay products. For sure this is worth checking out.
  • • UI isn't complicated • Has some built in audio editing features • Easy-to-configure input and output settings • Supports VST and Nyquist plugins
  • Really easy to use for basic recording. But also with a ton of features to make your recordings perfect.

Cons

  • Beginning with v3.2 the linux version took a real performance hit. The time to process things like normalize, compressor, noise reduction, and Export to mp3 run substantially slower. Also with v3.2 when the track exceeds the width of the window, there is no slider at the bottom until the window is resized. The slider should automatically appear when needed. It has not been fixed with v.3.3 The worst thing is changes to the UI. I have used Audacity for many years and am very accustomed to the location of buttons on the forms. Starting with v3.2 buttons on many of the Effects forms have been both renamed and moved from the bottom of the form to the top. Grrrr! It is one thing to rename a button from OK to Apply. But when the button location is moved, that is a real no-no. It slows me down, is frustrating, and serves no useful purpose.
  • The interface could be improved - it looks like an early 2000's software.
  • I'm not a huge audio person so I only can say it worked for what I needed it for. I haven't found any cons as of yet.
  • • Requires plugins before using some specific audio formats (mp3, m4a, etc.) • Can't have an audio monitor • Lacks certain features
  • Even though I've used Audacity for a while, I still don't really know how to use half the things it does, so it could be overwhelming for some.
