Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Apache Netbeans is an IDE which can be used for both java, php and frontend development. It is free, open source and has a great community support. It can also be used cross platform.
  • Open Source & free Good code completion Code Analyzer & converter for latest Java versions Great debugging feature Plugin support Cross platform availability
  • (+) Easy to set up and use a very good interface. (+) Supports many programming languages like java, c++, PHP, and many others. (+) Code suggestions are very efficient. (+) Debugging is easy, step by step (+) Support for multiple platforms like ubuntu, mac, windows
  • NetBeans has proved to be a great IDE for compiling Java Applications. It can be used to code your own programs as well as trying out and debugging codes filled with errors.

Cons

  • Unlike PhpStorm it lacks advanced features like intelligent autocomplete and dedicated framework support
  • It's not very well optimized in terms of memory usage. Slow loading times especially for larger projects.
  • (-) It becomes slow when you have background operations. (-) Plugins can be improved for web apps. (-) Searching for words in code can be fast. (-) Launch time is slow.
  • The setup can be quite tedious especially for people who aren't too computer literate. They're going to have a hard time installing the IDE by itself because of the complicated instructions.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Overleaf is an online LaTeX editor, which makes it easy to write LaTeX independent of the device You are using. The free plan offers all You need to write beautiful and very precise customizable document layouts. You would have all Your projects in a user friendly web interface, where You can organize them in folders and assign labels. Another pro in my opinion would be that they offer special prices for students and groups of students.

Cons

  • Version Control for longer than one session is only possible in the paid plan, as well as Git/GitHub or DropBox integration. If you are starting from scratch, You will have to invest some time in learning how to equip yourself with the necessary packages and get handy in typing the basic commands. The best way of doing this would be to get hands on your project with the help of one of the templates overleaf offers (CV, formal letter, paper, book, etc.).
