A software synthesizer for Linux, originally forked from ZynAddSubFX (Copyright 2002-2009 Nasca Octavian Paul) in 2009 by Alan Calvert. Initially, Yoshimi delivered the same synthesizer capabilities. After early improvement of Jack and Alsa midi/audio performance, now many new features have been added, and we are concentrating on accessibility.
Yoshimi comes with a built-in User Guide, and there is also a highly detailed Advanced Reference Manual under continuous development: https://github.com/Yoshimi/yoshimi-doc/raw/master/pdf/yoshimi-advanced-reference-manual.pdf

User Reviews

  • I love this synth so much. So accessible, as simple or complicated as you want.
  • A very powerful software synthesizer!

  • Yoshimi's not your grandmother's synth! First impression may be one of a vintage UI, but there's more than meets the eye. This is a software synth of incredible depth, featuring extensively configurable additive, subtractive and pad synthesis, editable envelopes for amplitudes and frequencies, LFO's, many modulation options and filter types, "humanization" of parameters, and extensive midi learning. In terms of sound quality, Yoshimi can compete with the best in class. It contains one of the best algorithms for organic pad sound synthesis known to mankind. In addition, it provides accessibility features for blind users and very good CPU performance (versions of it run on raspberry pi). Given the depth of the software, designing your own sounds comes with a learning curve, but Yoshimi has a 287 page (at the time of writing) manual for those who want to get the most out of it. Yoshimi is optimized for Linux operating systems with ALSA or JACK audio connection kit. It can run as standalone synth, or as an LV2 plugin. For a similar synth supporting windows OS, try ZynAddSubFx.
  • Yoshimi is an integral part of my Linux based music making, and it is extremely feature packed and flexible. I don't know of any Open Source synth that does as much as Yoshimi does. One of the best, if not THE best synth out there!
