Do you need quick capture and encoding capabilities for video on your desktop? VirtualDub is a free, Open Source solution specifically designed for that purpose. VirtualDub might lack the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video in return. It has batch-processing capabilities for processing large numbers of files and can be extended with third-party video filters.

User Reviews

  • Thank you very much for the program distributed under a free open license!

  • Heuehb

  • It is quite complete and functional. It has useful tools and is stable. Even so, lacks support for newest codecs...

  • Unusable. Version 1.10.4 on Windows 10 gave the following VirtualDub Error when trying to open an AVI file: "VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable." So I'm unable to edit my AVI files and need to find other software that includes codecs needed to do the most basic function.
