SIMBUCA (before called Simonion) is a simulation package that simulates the motion of charged particles under the influence of Electric and/or Magnetic fields.
What makes Simbuca unique is that you can choose to calculate the Coulomb interaction between ions on a Graphics cards which is much faster than calculating this on the conventional CPU (reducing the simulation time from years to days).

Therefore Simbuca has been applied in various projects which required to understand the behaviour of charged "trapped" particles under the influence of EM Fields and there mutual Coulomb interaction.

Simbuca is easy to read and understand and can be tweaked to your personal needs.
It has been applied to simulate different types of particles: for example antiprotons, positrons, 39K+ , highly charged ions, negatively charged particles.

Simbuca also has been applied to simulate Penning/Paul traps, Mr-TOFs, RFQs, ...

Simbuca is also used in othe applications were the Coulomb interaction and EM field tracking is required like e.g. an MR-TOF: Simulated ToF spectra of an initial mixture of CO + (red) and N 2 + (blue) ions (ToF compared to the non-interacting N 2 + reference ion). The trapping time increases from top to bottom of every part of the picture (details in picture). The Coulomb scaling factors are a: 0 (no Coulomb interaction), b: 5, c: 10, d: 20. Coulomb interactions between ions are taken into account in the right column. Here 1000 ions are each given a charge of 10^4+ to represent 10^7 ions. Ions move 50 μs between the frames. Due to the Coulomb interaction in the cloud, the ion rotates around the center of the cloud (right column). Without Coulomb interaction taken into account the ion stays at the same position inside the cloud (left column).
