RotorCrypt X v1.9.0.1 – Security Update

RotorCrypt X is a professional multi-layer encryption tool for Windows designed to protect private messages from unauthorized access. The software uses a rotor-based encryption system combined with a unique shared key mechanism — meaning no passwords are ever exchanged between communication partners. The decryption logic is recalculated independently on each device, making interception practically impossible even if all stored files are compromised.

What's new in version 1.9.0.1

Compatibility

  • RotorCrypt X is now fully compatible with RotorCrypt X-Files (Desktop, v1.2.2.3) and RotorCrypt X-Mobile (v1.8.2) — messages can now be exchanged seamlessly across all three platforms

Security

  • Closed a potential vulnerability during the first-contact key exchange that could have allowed a man-in-the-middle attacker to interfere undetected
  • Strengthened the underlying message encryption
  • Fixed a flaw in secret-word encryption/decryption between contacts that could cause valid shared words to be rejected
  • Improved detection logic to reliably distinguish a genuine synchronization issue from an actual wrong-contact/tampered-message case

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed numerous program freezes caused by faulty popup window focus/close handling (login screen, first-time setup, rotor-count warning, inactivity countdown, wrong-contact and mismatch dialogs, and more)
  • Fixed a freeze that could occur during first-time password setup while the encryption matrix was being initialized
  • Fixed a crash that could occur during the server handshake step
  • Added a missing Cancel button to the secret-word dialog so the process can be exited cleanly instead of getting stuck
  • Fixed the application icon not appearing correctly in the Windows "Apps & Features" list after installation

What's new in version 1.8.8

The most significant change in this release is the hardening of the password protection layer. Argon2id — the current international standard for password hashing recommended by OWASP — has been upgraded from 64 MB to 256 MB memory requirement per calculation attempt. This means any attacker attempting to brute-force the password would require four times the hardware resources per attempt compared to the previous version. On modern GPU clusters that typically run thousands of parallel calculations, this dramatically reduces the number of viable attack attempts. A waiting time of a few seconds during login is a more than acceptable trade-off for this level of security.

The rotor count logic has been improved — the application now automatically resets and validates the rotor count on every contact switch, preventing configuration errors during encryption.

The integrated help documentation has been updated and clarified in all 10 supported languages, covering password security guidelines, synchronisation recovery, messenger integration and licence activation.
