v1.7.7

mrv2 and vmrv2 are open source professional players and review tools for VFX, animation and computer graphics for Windows, Linux and macOS. You can build them from source or download prebuilt binaries.

Binaries are available for multiple operating systems and CPU architectures. Be sure to download the correct one for your system, and check all release assets—GitHub often hides part of the list.

If you're unsure which download you need, use:

Guided Downloads

Two versions are available:

mrv2 with OpenGL backend (free and donationware) vmrv2 with Vulkan backend (free and donationware)

It has NOT been tested on Windows aarch64 (beta testers wanted).

Unlocking Features

To unlock donationware features, open:

Help->Unlock Features.

The same license works for both mrv2 and vmrv2, so you can have both installed. An internet connection is required for license activation.

Without a donation license, the following features are unavailable:

Full Annotations and Color Area selection (Solo+)
Python (Standard+)
Editing (Edit+)
Voice and Link Annotations (Pro)
Unlimited WebRTC Remote Reviews (Pro)

The free version still includes:

Tone-mapping (OpenGL) and HDR (Vulkan)
OpenEXR layer switching
Saving Images and Movies with Audio
Limited WebRTC Remote Reviews (2 artists for 30 minutes)

Change Log

  • Improved FBO depth when saving HDR movies.
  • Added automatically saving of "colorInteropID" metadata when saving OpenEXR images.
  • Added automatically saving of chromaticities to OpenEXRs if HDR data is present in a movie.
  • Notes Panel and Annotations Panel's Frame Note are now synchronized both ways and will display the text entered.
  • Added OTIO's Spatial Coordinates and compatibility setting to the Settings Panel.
  • Added the (L) (Lumma) channel selection on the Layer's pull-down display.
  • Made (R), (G), (B), (A) and (L) channel selection be persistant when changing clips.
  • Made gain, gamma and saturation persistant when changing clips.
  • Closing all the clips now resets gain, gamma and saturation.
  • Python: Improved the cmd.setDisplayOptions() to reflect in the UI properly.
  • Python: Improved Python online docs for display options.
  • Core: Improved memory on HW decoding frames. Switching back and forth between HW and SW decoding works better now.
  • Core/UI/Vulkan: Added a "Export Mode" options to control how the colors are exported into the pictures.
    • Baked HDR (bakes the HDR transform in the picture. Will only look good in an HDR display)
    • Scene Linear (linearizes the data for OpenEXR, with metadata. Will look good when the proper OCIO transform is used)
    • Baked SDR (bakes the HDR transform in an SDR space. Will match OpenGL SDR, but will clip HDR data).

Fixes:

  • Fixed HW decoding to select HW decoders first before software decoders when HW decoding is on. Previously, the software decoder, depending on codec, would come first.
  • Fixed automatic bit selection of main framebuffer for YUV_420P_U10 and 16-bit semi-planar formats. They were defaulting to 8 bits instead of 16 bits.
  • Fixed saving pictures and videos with half or quarter resolution on the Vulkan backend.
  • Fixed + button in Notes Panel adding two annotations.
  • Fixed one standing validation error on Wipe comparison.
  • Fixed saving of images from a video on OpenGL backend, which could hang.
  • Fixed saving of images with padded zeros in the Vulkan backend.
