mrv2 and vmrv2 are open source professional players and review tools for VFX, animation and computer graphics for Windows, Linux and macOS. You can choose to compile from source or get binaries.

If you are unsure what binary to choose, go to:

https://mrv2.sourceforge.io/downloads/mrv2-download-page.html

mrv2 ships now in two compiled versions:

  • mrv2 with OpenGL backend (free and donationware)
  • vmrv2 with Vulkan backend (free and donationware)

It also ships for many more architectures, so be careful to download the correct one. It has NOT been tested on Windows aarch64 nor Linux aarch64 (beta testers wanted).

Unlocking Features

For unlocking features, once mrv2 loads, you should go to:

   Help->Unlock Features.

Donationware prices of binary licenses through PayPal:

Donate

License works for both mrv2 and vmrv2 (you can have both installed). You need to have an internet connection for the license system.

The donationware version when running without a donation, does not have:

- Annotations (available from Solo and later)
- Python (available in Standard and later)
- Editing (available in Edit and later)
- Voice and Link Annotations (available in Pro)

They do have, however:

- Tone-mapping (OpenGL) and HDR (Vulkan)
- OpenEXR layer switching
- Saving Images and Movies with Audio

Prices might change (go up or down) depending on competition and new features.

ChangeLog

  • macOS Users get some love as the Vulkan backend has been made to work on both old and new macOS properly.
  • This update concentrates on UI improvements and user friendliness.
  • Improved Timecode input widget skipping over : and ; and prevent an invalid time (ie. --:--:--:--).
  • Fixed Log Panel becoming huge in height when dragging from one Window to another with different scaling factors. It was a Windows bug.
  • Fixed menus in FLTK potentially appearing floating in space with two screens of different scaling factors.
  • Fixed Panels saving and loading positions on multiple screen setups with different scaling factors on Windows.
  • Fixed timeline and pixel toolbar stretching outside the main window when there was a window with a bigger scale factor than the window that was running vmrv2 on (Linux Wayland issue)
  • Incremented the margins of floating panels to 4 pixels to make them easier to resize.
  • Made the vectorscope smaller so it fits properly on the side panel.
  • Fixed EDL and Playlist creation which had gotten broken on v1.5.0 in code simplification.
  • Modified Edit Menu to make it more clear.
  • Move Edit Associated to Edit Menu.
  • Fixed Trim editing of Transitions hanging.
  • Fixed a potential hanging on the Vulkan thumbnail system. If a thumbnail cannot be gotten in two seconds, it will default to black.
  • Made missing media files in session files ask if they want to be changed for another media file with a file requester when loaded and media cannot be read.
  • Cleaned up Darby's tlRender code stripping it to its minimum. It is now faster, smaller and compiles faster.
  • Fixed resizing of Pixel Bar under X11 (Wayland was OK).
  • Made Python's Panel menus appear on the correct monitor on multiple monitor setups with several scaling factors on Linux Wayland. The drawback is that the Python Panel can only be docked with the yellow button, not by going to the dock area like all other panels.
  • Added multi selecting of transition items and clips.
  • Made Edit->Selected->Remove Items handle removing of both multiple transitions and clips.
  • Made Edit->Selected->Remove Items be run with the Delete key when focus is in the timeline and selection mode is Select.
  • Fixed Vulkan macOS to check hdr.monitor.max_nits >= 400 for actual HDR support.
  • Bumped macOS deployment version to 12.0 or higher.
  • Updated OpenEXR to v3.4.7.
  • Updated OpenJPH to v0.26.3.
  • Uninstall on Windows now uninstalls latest version of mvr2/vmrv2 properly.
