v1.5.8

mrv2 and vmrv2 are open source professional players and review tools for VFX, animation and computer graphics for Windows, Linux and macOS. You can choose to compile from source or get binaries.

If you are unsure what binary to choose, go to:

https://mrv2.sourceforge.io/downloads/mrv2-download-page.html

mrv2 ships now in two compiled versions:

  • mrv2 with OpenGL backend (free and donationware)
  • vmrv2 with Vulkan backend (free and donationware)

It also ships for many more architectures, so be careful to download the correct one. It has NOT been tested on Windows aarch64 nor Linux aarch64 (beta testers wanted).

Unlocking Features

For unlocking features, once mrv2 loads, you should go to:

   Help->Unlock Features.

Donationware prices of binary licenses through PayPal:

Donate

License works for both mrv2 and vmrv2 (you can have both installed). You need to have an internet connection for the license system.

The donationware version when running without a donation, does not have:

- Annotations (available from Solo and later)
- Python (available in Standard and later)
- Editing (available in Edit and later)
- Voice and Link Annotations (available in Pro)

They do have, however:

- Tone-mapping (OpenGL) and HDR (Vulkan)
- OpenEXR layer switching
- Saving Images and Movies with Audio

Prices might change (go up or down) depending on competition and new features.

ChangeLog

  • Fixed toggling off Render->HDR Data->Inactive on HDR monitors which was not working previously.
  • Fixed Vulkan metadata being sent when not tone-mapping and no OCIO was set.
  • Fixed one minor validation error on pixel look ups just after loading a video.
  • Fixed showing sRGB pictures (like .png) on Windows on an HDR monitor when the monitor had HDR set to off.
  • Made OCIO's "Not on Videos or BT709 Data" the default option.
  • Added Linux's HDR enabled monitor detection code, besides parsing EDID.
  • Fixed Wayland's monitor enumeration to match FLTK's monitor indices.
  • Made Annotations Panel's Notes text wrap around when reaching the border.
  • Improved displaying SDR content on HDR monitor on Windows.
  • Improved moving Panel windows from a 4K monitor to a 2K monitor when their scaling factor is different.

This is the first version that me, @ggarra13, has personally tested HDR on Windows and Linux. Linux HDR is beta. For most users it will probably arrive on Ubuntu 26.04 with new NVidia drivers on April.

If you want Linux HDR now, you need:

  • Ubuntu 25.10 (or similar) with GNOME49 or KWin6.4.5.
  • NVidia driver 590.48.01 or later.
  • Compilation of Vk_hdr_layer from git.
  • Use ENABLE_HDR_WSI=1 vmrv2 <movie>
