This is an offspring of an idea I had back in 2004 of a way to visualise and navigate within a dataset.
The snail is like a metric with rows and columns but instead visualised in sectors and rows with a central level indicator that provides an aggregated indicator.
One can switch view (global by sector, global by rows, details) by clicking the central indicator or selecting rows/sectors, and of course drill-down.

This is based on D3 (d3js.org), the original one was in Flash.
