WHAT IS ExTiX 24.8, 23.11, 23.5, 22.9 and 16.5 64 bit - five versions? NEWS 240816 ABOUT ExTiX Deepin 24.8 Live BASED ON Deepin 23 STABLE I’ve released a new version of ExTiX Deepin today (240816). The previous ExTiX Deepin 23 version is from 240607. It was based on Deepin 23 RC. This ExTiX Build is based on Deepin 23 STABLE (latest version) released by Deepin Technology on August 15, 2024. See: https://www.deepin.org/en/deepin-23-is-officially-released/ ExTiX 24.8 works in the same way as all other ExTiX versions. I.e. you can install it to hard drive while running the system live. Use Deepin Installer or Refracta Installer for that. You can also create your own live installable Deepin 23 system with Refracta Snapshot. (Using ExTiX 24.8 as a "base system/template"). So easy that a ten year old child can do it! REPLACEMENT ExTiX version 240816 with Deepin 23 STABLE replaces version 240607 with Deepin 23 RC, version 240209 (23 BETA3) and version 221219 (ExTiX 22.12) with Deepin 20.8 STABLE. NEW FUNCTIONS etc. in ExTiX 24.8 Deepin: 1. VirtualBox Guest Additions are NOT pre-installed. No real need for them since you can run ExTiX in full screen in VirtualBox by just changing the screen resolution. Watch this screenshot: A) https://www.extix.se/build-240816/extix-deepin-24.8-screen-resolution.jpg 2. You can use Deepin Installer as an alternative to Refracta Installer. Use Deepin Installer preferable on UEFI computers if you want/need to install or reinstall Grub. 3. You can run ExTiX from RAM. Use boot alternative 2 (load to RAM) or Advanced. A wonderful way to run Linux if you have enough RAM. Everything will be super fast. When ExTiX has booted up you can remove the DVD or USB stick. 4. I’ve added Synaptic Package Manager. A must I think. 5. You can watch Netflix while running Firefox. 6. You can install ExTiX Deepin also in VirtualBox/VMware using Refracta Installer or Deepin Installer. NOTE 1: ExTiX 24.8 Deepin runs MUCH better live from a USB stick or from hard drive after a hard drive installation. I mean compared to running ExTiX Deepin virtually in VirtualBox/VMware. 7. In version 240816 I've also included Refracta Installer. Use it in VirtualBox if you want to have an EXACT copy of ExTiX Deepin installed. You don't have to "chroot" to install Grub. Just choose to "Copy Grub files" when asked to. Watch this movie: https://www.extix.se/deepin/extix-refracta-installer.mp4 NOTE 2: While installing ExTiX to hard drive using Deepin Installer or Refracta Installer you should keep the username user and the passwords for user and root. You can always change that afterwards. The username is changed by running the command "change-username user new-username". You must first go into console mode by pressing Ctrl Alt F2 simultaneously and then log in as root with password root. IMPORTANT NOTE If you want to build your own Deepin live installable Linux system from ExTiX Deepin you MUST use Refracta Installer when installing ExTiX to hard drive. If you use Deepin Installer (which otherwise works very well) you will find that both Refracta Snapshot and Deepin Installer are gone when the installation is ready. And you can't (successfully) reinstall Deepin Installer for some unknown reason. UNIQUE I may add that there is no other (good) LIVE English version of Deepin 23 STABLE. A YouTube REVIEW of ExTiX 23.9 WITH Deepin 23 BETA I must share a video on YouTube about ExTiX 23.9, which was released 230903. The video will give you a complete picture of ExTiX’s functions and benefits: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsXb31CeBGQ&t=1402s AN ENTHUSIASTIC REVIEW of ExTiX 22.12 with Deepin 20.8 I must share a video on YouTube about ExTiX 22.12, which was released 221219. The video will give you a complete picture of ExTiX’s functions and benefits. See the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsUB_jk8kms You can also watch a YouTube video about ExTiX 23.9 with Deepin 23 BETA: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsXb31CeBGQ&t=1390s #################################################### NEWS 231123 ABOUT ExTiX 23.11 LXQt Build 231123 I have made a new version of ExTiX "The Ultimate Linux System". I call it ExTiX 23.11 LXQt Live System. (The previous LXQt version was 23.5 from 230530). ExTiX 23.11 is based on upcoming Ubuntu 24.04 LTS ("Noble Numbat")! Ubuntu 24.04 will be supported until June 2029. The best thing with ExTiX 23.11 is that while running the system live (from a DVD/USB) or from hard drive you can use Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Ubuntu 24.04 system. So easy that a ten year child can do it! One other very good thing with this version of ExTiX is that it is quite light. The ISO file is of only 2050 MB, which means that you can run the system super fast from RAM. When the boot process is ready you can eject the DVD or USB stick. Use Boot alternative 3 or Advanced options >> load to RAM. LXQt 1.4 (latest version, released 231105) is used as Desktop Environment (DE). Kernel 6.6.1-amd64-exton is used. VirtualBox Guest Additions are pre-installed, which means (among other things) that you can run ExTiX 23.11 in full screen in VirtualBox. Watch this sreenshot: https://www.extix.se/extix-23.11-calamares-ready-to-install-vbox-231123.jpg Another big new thing in this version of ExTiX is that I have installed Calamares Installer. "Calamares is an installer framework. By design it is very customizable, in order to satisfy a wide variety of needs and use cases. Calamares aims to be easy, usable & beautiful while remaining independent of any particular Linux distribution". Nevertheless I've kept Refracta Installer. Use the Installer you prefer. Study all pre-installed packages in ExTiX 23.11: https://www.extix.se/extix-lxqt-installed-packages-231123.txt THE IMPORTANCE OF ExTiX 23.11 BEING BASED ON AN UNSTABLE VERSION OF Ubuntu Programs won't crash or anything like that. And I've not discovered any "bugs". That said you should of course be a bit careful. This version of ExTiX is for people who like "cutting-edge" software. And if you install the system to hard drive you will eventually be among the first people to run the stable version of Ubuntu 24.04! ######################################################### NEWS 230510 ABOUT ExTiX LXQt Mini 23.5 uefi - Build 230510 I've made a new "mini" version of ExTiX. It is based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. Ubuntu 22.04 will be supported until April 2027. That's why ExTiX 23.5 isn't based on Ubuntu 23.0.4. The ISO file is of only 1550 MB, which is good if you want to run the system super fast from RAM. The best thing with ExTiX 23.5 is that while running the system live (from DVD/USB) or from hard drive you can use Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Ubuntu 22.04 system. So easy that a ten year child can do it! ExTiX 23.5 uses kernel 6.3.1-amd64-exton. This uefi version of ExTiX is made especially for older computers with low RAM and for running in VirtualBox/VMware. VirtualBox Guest Additions are pre-installed, which means (among other things) that you can run ExTiX 23.5 in full screen in VirtualBox. Study all pre-installed packages in ExTiX 23.5: https://www.extix.se/extix-lxqt-mini-installed-packages-230510.txt ####################################################### NEWS ABOUT ExTiX 22.9 Build 220922 with the KDE Plasma Desktop environment together with Anbox ("Android in a Box) Refracta Installer and Refracta Snapshot. 1. ExTiX KDE Plasma is based on Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS "Jammy Jellyfish". KDE-plasma-desktop is used as Desktop environment. All packages have been updated to the latest version by 220922. Kernel 5.15.47 is used. 2. I have pre-installed Anbox ("Android in a Box") with Google Play Store. You can use Google Play Store for installing the apps you want. NOTE: Not ALL apps will run in Anbox. Furthermore Anbox won't run live (from a DVD or USB stick) or in VirtualBox. In this version of ExTiX KDE/Anbox you can run the YouTube app with good video and sound quality. Not with the very best quality, but... IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT ANBOX: On some computers you may not be able to start Anbox from the menu. If that is the case you shall open up a terminal and run the following two commands: snap disable anbox && snap enable anbox FOLLOWED by: EGL_PLATFORM=x11 anbox.appmgr Or maybe this command: DRI_PRIME=1 anbox.appmgr 3. Other included important/useful packages are: GParted, GCC and other compilation tools so that you can install packages from source. Furthermore all multimedia codecs. Everything the average Linux user could wish for I would say. 4. The best thing with ExTiX 22.9 is that while running the system live (from DVD/USB) or from hard drive you can use Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Ubuntu/Anbox system. Very easy to do. 5. VirtualBox Guest Additions are pre-installed. With those installed you can run ExTiX KDE in full screen in VirtualBox. NOTE: You can't run Anbox in VirtualBox. YouTube VIDEO ABOUT ExTiX 21.11 (a previous version) Maurizio Tosetti has made a YouTube video about ExTiX 21.11 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flL8ENdZE6w ##################################################### NEWS 181020 ABOUT my Ubuntu Build (ExTiX) from 161203 for Intel Compute Sticks Today I was about to make a new version of my ExTiX Build from 161203. I quickly learned that it isn t necessary. It turns out that full support for the Intel Compute Stick is included in all kernels from version 4.11 until today s releases (4.18). Kernel 4.8.0-26-exton-IntelAtom (which was used in my build from 161203) was patched see my INFO site: https://www.extix.se/?p=208 Without patches it wouldn't have worked. Today any Linux system can run on the stick. At least all Ubuntu versions from which I have experience. This means (of course) that all ExTiX flavors can run on the stick. The only thing to think about is that the Grub boot line has to be somewhat special see my INFO site. Those of you who have installed ExTiX Build 161203 can just upgrade the system from 16.10 to 18.04.1 LTS and then install a new kernel. For example my Ubuntu kernel 4.18.12-exton, which you can download: https://exton.se/LINUX/ubuntu-kernel-64bit-4.18.12-exton.zip First open /etc/apt/sources.list with Leafpad and replace all instances of yakkety with bionic. Then run the command sudo apt update. After that you can upgrade the whole system using Synaptic. I have done it myself today so I know it works. READ MORE: https://www.extix.se/?p=208 ####################################################### ABOUT ALL VERSIONS - 240816 ExTiX Linux Live systems 64 bit are based on Debian, Ubuntu and Deepin. I have installed Deepin 23 STABLE in ExTiX 24.8, LXQt 1.4 (in ExTiX 23.11 Build 231123) and KDE Plasma Desktop together with Anbox ("Android in a Box") in an extra version of 220922 - ExTiX 22.9. Deepin is a Linux distribution/Desktop "devoted to providing a beautiful, easy to use, safe and reliable system for global users". "LXQt is the Qt port and the upcoming version of LXDE, the Lightweight Desktop Environment. It is the product of the merge between the LXDE-Qt and the Razor-qt projects: A lightweight, modular, blazing-fast and user-friendly desktop environment". About KDE Frameworks: "KDE Frameworks are 60 addon libraries to Qt which provide a wide variety of commonly needed functionality in mature, peer reviewed and well tested libraries with friendly licensing terms". NOTE1: Build 161203 is only for Intel Compute Sticks - http://www.intel.se/content/www/se/sv/compute-stick/intel-compute-stick.html NOTE: While running ExTiX Deepin 24.8 and ExTiX LXQt 23.11/23.5 and ExTiX KDE/Anbox 22.9 live or from hard drive you can use Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Deepin/Debian/Ubuntu system. A ten year old child can do it! The system language is ENGLISH. NEWS 161203 ABOUT ExTiX for Intel Compute Sticks I have made a new special version of ExTiX 16.5, which can be used on Intel Compute Sticks. About such sticks read http://www.intel.se/content/www/se/sv/compute-stick/intel-compute-stick.html Build 161203 uses "my" kernel 4.8.0-26-exton-InteAtom with special patches, which I have Linuxium to thank for - http://linuxiumcomau.blogspot.com/ ##################################################### MORE ABOUT ExTiX All packages have been updated to the latest version by 240816, 231123, 230510, 220922 respectively 161203. Kernel 6.10.3-amd64-exton is used in the Deepin version of ExTiX. Kernel 6.6.1-amd64-exton is used in the main LXQt version of Extix. (Kernel.org's kernel 6.6.1). Kernel 5.15.47 is used in the KDE/Anbox version of ExTiX. Kernel 4.8.0-26-exton-IntelAtom is used in ExTiX Build 161203 for the Intel Compute Stick. 2. Only Firefox is installed as Web Browser.(You can now watch Netflix in Firefox). ExTiX Deepin uses Google Chrome though. 3. I have replaced Ubuntu's installer Ubiquity with Calamares Installer. "Calamares is an installer framework. By design it is very customizable, in order to satisfy a wide variety of needs and use cases". NOTE1: Refracta Installer and Deepin Installer is used ExTiX Deepin 24.8. Refracta installer is also used in 23.5 LXQt Mini, ExTiX 23.11 LXQt and 22.9 KDE/Anbox. 4. Other included important/useful packages are: LibreOffice, Thunderbird, GParted, Brasero, SMPlayer, GCC and other compilation tools so that you can install packages from source. Furthermore "all" multimedia codecs. Everything the average Linux user could wish for I would say. You can of course install anything you like, even while running the system live. I.e. from a DVD or USB stick. 5. While running ExTiX 24.8 Deepin, ExTiX LXQt 23.11/23.5 and ExTiX KDE/Anbox 22.9 live or from hard drive you can use Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Ubuntu/Debian/Deepin system. WHAT'S SO SPECIAL about ExTiX? 1. The ExTiX ISO's are ISO-hybrids, which means that they can very easily be transferred (copied) to a USB pen drive. You can even run ExTiX from the USB stick and save all your system changes on the stick. I.e. you will enjoy persistence! NOTE: Not as regards Build 161203 for Intel Compute Sticks. Should be installed to a USB stick using Rufus or Etcher in Windows. 2. Another big improvement is that ExTiX can run from RAM. Use Boot alternative 2 (Load to RAM). When the system has booted up you can remove the disc (DVD) or USB stick. You'll need at least 4 GB RAM to run ExTiX that way. Running from RAM means that the system will run faster than from DVD or USB stick. Everything will be superfast I would say! 3. ExTiX is now more stable than ever. 4. The installation program Ubiquity (live installer) is now working as intended in Build 161203. 5. While running ExTiX Deepin 24.8, ExTiX LXQt 23.11, ExTiX LXQt Mini 23.5 and ExTiX KDE/Anbox 22.9 live or from hard drive you can use Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Linux system. So easy that a ten your child can do it! Watch a movie/slideshow showing just as easy it is to use Refracta Snapshot: https://www.extix.se/deepin/extix-refracta-installer.mp4 LOG IN to the Deepin, LXQt repectively KDE/Anbox Desktop You can run ExTiX live as the ordinary user live or as root (super user). Log in from LightDM, LXDM respectively Slim's Login Manager as root with password root or as user with password live. During a hard drive installation you will of course get the opportunity to create your own normal user. NOTE: In ExTiX Deepin 24.8 and ExTiX KDE 22.9 the password for user/live is live. In ExTiX LXQt the password for user live is live. In ExTiX Deepin 24.8 Build 240816, ExTiX LXQt 23.11 and LXQt Mini Build 230510 the passwords are user/live and root/root. USB installation Read my instruction: https://www.extix.se/usb-install/ REFRACTA SNAPSHOT While running ExTiX live or from hard drive you can use Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Ubuntu/Debian/Deepin system.
