ExTiX - The Ultimate Linux System Files

WHAT IS ExTiX 26.4, 26.1, 25.2-2 and 25.12 64 bit - four versions? 

NEWS ABOUT ExTiX 26.4 Build 260407 with the GNOME 50 Desktop Environment together with Waydroid 1.6.2 ("Waydroid lets you launch a complete Android system on Linux with Google Play Services so you can install your favorite apps"), Calamares Installer, Refracta Installer and Refracta Snapshot.

1. ExTiX GNOME is based on upcoming Ubuntu 26.04 LTS "Resolute Raccoon". GNOME 50 (with Wayland) is used as Desktop environment. All packages have been updated to the latest version by 260407. Kernel 7.0.0-rc6-amd64-exton and Ubuntu's original kernel 7.0.0-10.10-generic is used. To use WayDroid you'll have to run kernel 7.0.0-10.10-generic and log in to the GNOME 50 Desktop with Wayland. Waydroid doesn't work under X11.

2. I have pre-installed Waydroid 1.6.2, but NOT Google Play. That's because you'll have to register your computer with your own Gmail account to be able to run Google Play. Everything is ready in ExTiX 26.4 for installing GAPPS/Google Play/Google Play Services though. Install ExTiX to hard drive. Then just start Waydroid from the menu and wait for it to initialize. Be patient. It will take some time. When ready just press "Done" and Waydroid/Android 13 will start. Login to Google Play with your Gmail account and start installing the apps you want.

NOTE: Not ALL apps will run using Waydroid. Furthermore Waydroid won't run live (from a DVD or a USB stick) or in VirtualBox/VMware/Qemu. 

3. Other included important/useful packages are: GParted, GCC and other compilation tools so that you can install packages from source. Furthermore  all  multimedia codecs. Everything the average Linux user could wish for I would say.

4. The best thing with ExTiX 26.4 is that while running the system live (from a DVD/USB stick) or from hard drive you can use Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Ubuntu/Waydroid system. Very easy to do. 

NOTE: In a previous ExTiX KDE from 220922 I had Anbox installed. "Anbox is a container-based approach to boot a full Android system on a regular GNU/Linux system like Ubuntu". However Anbox is no longer actively developed.

IMPORTANT NOTE about Calamares Installer
In Build 26.4 you can use Calamares Installer as an alternative to Refracta Installer. Calamares works very well with one exception. You can't login to GNOME with the user you have created during the install process. You will have to login to GNOME as root ("Other") with password root or as Linux User with password live. Then delete your created user with the command "sudo deluser myuser". After that recreate your user with the command "sudo adduser myuser". NEWS 260123 ABOUT ExTiX Deepin 26.1 Live BASED ON Deepin 25.0.10 STABLE 
I’ve released a new version of ExTiX Deepin today (260123). This ExTiX Build is based on Deepin 25.0.10 STABLE (latest version) released by Deepin Technology on January 20, 2026. See: https://www.deepin.org/en/deepin-25-0-10-release/
ExTiX 26.1 works in the same way as all other ExTiX versions. I.e. you can install it to hard drive while running the system live. Use Refracta Installer for that. You can also create your own live installable Deepin 25.0.10 system with Refracta Snapshot. (Using ExTiX 26.1 as a "base system/template"). So easy that a ten year old child can do it!

NEW FUNCTIONS etc. in ExTiX 26.1 Deepin:
1. VirtualBox Guest Additions are NOT pre-installed. No real need for them since you can run ExTiX in full screen in VirtualBox by just changing the screen resolution. 
2. You can run ExTiX from RAM. Use boot alternative 2 (load to RAM) or Advanced. A wonderful way to run Linux if you have enough RAM. Everything will be super fast. When ExTiX has booted up you can remove the DVD or USB stick.
3. I’ve added Synaptic Package Manager. A must I think.
4. You can ONLY use Refracta Installer for hard drive installations. You can not use Calamares Installer or Deepin Installer. You may be able to start the Deepin Installer after installing it with "sudo apt install deepin-installer", but the installation to hard drive will fail. That's because my build of Deepin 25.0.10 differ from the original in some respects.
4b. I was not able to install Calamares Installer in this version of ExTiX Deepin. So you will have to stick with Refracta Installer.
5. You can watch Netflix while running Firefox.
6. You can install ExTiX Deepin also in VirtualBox/VMware using Refracta Installer. 
NOTE1: ExTiX 26.1 Deepin runs MUCH better live from a USB stick or from hard drive after a hard drive installation. I mean compared to running ExTiX Deepin virtually in VirtualBox/VMware. Some special Deepin apps won't run at all in VirtualBox/VMware. For example the Music, Calendar and Calculator apps.
7. While using Refracta Installer in VirtualBox you don't have to "chroot" to install Grub. Just choose to "Copy Grub files" when asked to. Watch this movie: https://www.extix.se/deepin/extix-refracta-installer.mp4
NOTE2: While installing ExTiX to hard drive using Refracta Installer you should keep the username user and the passwords for user and root. You can always change that afterwards. 

PERFORMANCE
Even though the system is BIG it runs quite fast. Especially if you run ExTiX from RAM. 

UNIQUE
I may add that there is no other (good) LIVE English remaster of Deepin 25.0.10 STABLE. ExTiX 26.1 is most certainly unique because it allows you to make your own Deepin 25.0.10 system. I.e. create a new ISO. Your own.

NEWS 251205 ABOUT ExTiX 25.12-2 Mini with LXDE and Refracta Snapshot ::: Build 251205
I have made a new version of ExTiX ("The Ultimate Linux System"). I call it ExTiX 25.12-2 LXDE Mini Live System. (The previous ExTiX Mini version was 23.5 from 230510). ExTiX 25.12-2 is a VERY PREMATURE remix of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS ("Resolute Raccoon"). Ubuntu 26.04 LTS will be supported until July 2031. 

ABOUT Build 25.12-2
I was aiming to build a really light version of ExTiX (as a remix of upcoming Ubuntu 26.04). I therefore started "from scratch" using the debootstrap method. "Debootstrap is a low-level tool that installs a basic Ubuntu system into a directory, giving you complete control over every package from the ground up. This method is often used to create a custom installation in a virtual machine (using QEMU, VirtualBox, etc.) or onto a specific disk partition" - see https://wiki.debian.org/Debootstrap. No matter how hard I tried I could not make a smaller ISO than the current one of 1870 MB. Many big packages are necessary to make the system usable. As an example I can mention the linux-firmware package. It is of 650 MB. Without it the System is useless. A small ISO is of importance if you want to run the system from RAM on older computers with low RAM. To run from RAM is the best way to run any Linux system. Super fast! I decided to use LXDE ("Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment") as DE instead of LXQt in the hope that it would hold down the size of the System. It did not help much though. 

FEATURES
The best thing with ExTiX 25.12-2 is that while running the system live (from a DVD/USB) or from hard drive you can use Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Ubuntu 26.04 LTS system. So easy that a ten year child can do it! One other very good thing with this version of ExTiX is that it is quite light. The ISO file is of only 1870 MB, which means that you can run the system super fast from RAM. When the boot process is ready you can eject the DVD or USB stick. Use Boot alternative 2 or Advanced options  >> load to RAM. LXDE is used as Desktop Environment (DE). Kernel 6.17.8-amd64-exton is used (as in ExTiX 25.12). You can use Refracta Installer to install ExTiX 25.12-2 to hard drive. It works very well.

THE IMPORTANCE OF ExTiX 25.12-2 Build 251205 being based on UPCOMING Ubuntu 26.04 LTS
Programs won’t “crash” or anything like that. And I haven’t noticed any important “bugs”. That said you should of course be a bit careful. Version 251205 of ExTiX is for people who like to use “cutting-edge” software and the latest kernels etc. You will always have the latest Ubuntu software installed if you regularly run the command "sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade". If you do that for example every week you can be among the first to have Ubuntu 26.04 STABLE installed.

I have made a new version of ExTiX ("The Ultimate Linux System"). I call it ExTiX 25.12 LXQt Live System. (The previous LXQt version was 24.12 from 241223). ExTiX 25.12 is a VERY PREMATURE remix of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS ("Resolute Raccoon"). Ubuntu 26.04 LTS will be supported until July 2031. 

FEATURES
The best thing with ExTiX 25.12 is that while running the system live (from a DVD/USB) or from hard drive you can use Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Ubuntu 26.04 LTS system. ABOUT ALL VERSIONS - 260407
ExTiX Linux Live Systems 64 bit are based on Debian, Ubuntu and Deepin. I have installed Deepin 25.0.10 in ExTiX 26,1 Build 260123, LXQt 2.2 (in ExTiX 25.12 Build 251201) and the GNOME 50 Desktop together with Waydroid 1.6.2  in an extra version of 260407 - ExTiX 26.4. Deepin is a Linux distribution/Desktop "devoted to providing a beautiful, easy to use, safe and reliable system for global users". "LXQt is the Qt port and the upcoming version of LXDE, the Lightweight Desktop Environment. It is the product of the merge between the LXDE-Qt and the Razor-qt projects: A lightweight, modular, blazing-fast and user-friendly desktop environment". 
NOTE: While running ExTiX Deepin 26.1 and ExTiX LXQt 25.12/25.12-2 and ExTiX GNOME/WayDroid 26.4 live or from hard drive you can use Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Deepin/Debian/Ubuntu system. A ten year old child can do it!

The system language is ENGLISH.

MORE ABOUT ExTiX 
All packages have been updated to the latest version by 260407, 260123, 251205 respectively 251201. Kernel 6.18.6-amd64-exton is used in the Deepin version of ExTiX. Kernel 6.17.8-amd64-exton is used in the main LXQt version of ExTiX. (Kernel.org's kernel 6.17.8). Kernel 7.0.0-rc6-amd64/7.0.0-10-generic is used in the GNOME/Waydroid version of ExTiX (version 26.4).
2. Only Firefox is installed as Web Browser.(You can now watch Netflix in Firefox). ExTiX Deepin uses Google Chrome though.
3. I have replaced Ubuntu's installer Ubiquity with Calamares Installer. "Calamares is an installer framework. By design it is very customizable, in order to satisfy a wide variety of needs and use cases". NOTE1: Only Refracta Installer is used in ExTiX Deepin 26.1. Refracta installer is also used in 25.12-2 LXDE Mini and ExTiX 25.12 LXQt.
4. Other included important/useful packages are: LibreOffice, Thunderbird, GParted, Brasero, SMPlayer, GCC and other compilation tools so that you can install packages from source. Furthermore "all" multimedia codecs. Everything the average Linux user could wish for I would say. You can of course install anything you like, even while running the system live. I.e. from a DVD or a USB stick.
5. While running ExTiX 26.1 Deepin, ExTiX LXQt 25.12, ExTiX LXDE Mini 25.12-2 and ExTiX GNOME/Waydroid 26.4 live or from hard drive you can use Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Ubuntu/Debian/Deepin system. 

WHAT'S SO SPECIAL about ExTiX? 
1. The ExTiX ISO's are ISO-hybrids, which means that they can very easily be transferred (copied) to a USB pen drive. You can even run ExTiX from the USB stick and save all your system changes on the stick. I.e. you will enjoy persistence!  
2. Another big improvement is that ExTiX can run from RAM. Use Boot alternative 2 (Load to RAM). When the system has booted up you can remove the disc (DVD) or USB stick. You'll need at least 4 GB RAM to run ExTiX that way. Running from RAM means that the system will run faster than from DVD or USB stick. Everything will be superfast I would say!
3. ExTiX is now more stable than ever. Not version 26.4, 25.12 and 25.12-2 (of course).
4. While running ExTiX Deepin 26.1, ExTiX LXQt 25.12, ExTiX LXDE Mini 25.12-2 and ExTiX GNOME/Waydroid 26.4 live or from hard drive you can use Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Linux system. So easy that a ten your child can do it! 

LOG IN to the Deepin, LXQt/LXDE respectively GNOME/Waydroid Desktop
You can run ExTiX live as the ordinary user live or as root (super user). Log in from LightDM, LXDM respectively Slim's Login Manager as root with password root or as user with password live. During a hard drive installation you will of course get the opportunity to create your own normal user. NOTE: In ExTiX Deepin 26.1 and ExTiX GNOME/Waydroid 26.4 the password for user/live is live. In ExTiX LXQt 25.12 and LXDE Mini Build 25.12-2 the passwords are user/live and root/root.
