If you kill a monster in the overworld, it leaves a chest
properly, the problem is when another overworld
monsters steps ontop of the tile containing the chest,
the chest is drawn overtop of them. At this point you
can step ontop of the chest that the monster is under,
grab the chest, walk off and the monster will appear
again. Also the monster will step off the chest by itself.
This bug only occurs when the monster that is going to
step underneath the chest is close to the Avatar's party
when the first combat to produce the chest occurs.
I don't know if I explained this very clearly, just reply if
you're confused and I'll try to clear it up.

Fixed. Now monsters simply can't walk on chests at all.
