For big files (>100 pages), xournal should
(1) load only a few pages a the time (memory footprint < 1gig say),
(2) allow for the insertion of "dividers" or "chapters" to avoid needing to split in smaller files.

Item (1) at least is definitely on the to-do list. Item (2) is also worthy of consideration -- thanks for the suggestion.
