Hi,
I really like Xournal, but I think it's messy to have to import pdfs, then export them again as pdf to be able to send them to others. This often results in having three copies of the same file: the original pdf, the xoj file, and the pdf generated from the xoj file...
I do not know much about the pdf format, but it seems to me that it is flexible enough to manage annotations. I understand that this probably requires a major overhaul of Xournal... but it would make it a really superior program!

It's not a bad idea in principle, but xournal is very far from being smart enough to parse the full PDF format. I don't want it to work at the level of PDF annotations either -- that's a rather crippled feature, and not handled well by many PDF renderers. So your suggestion is an interesting one for a long-term direction, but I don't think it's realistic in the short term.
