Hi,

I love xournal, I use it on my x230t on OpenBSD. It's great, but I find friction between the pen, highlight and hand tool. In some manner, I want all of these functions to be usable with the tip of the pen (button 1). I find my self clicking the tiny tool buttons in the toolbar to change tools, often missing (pointing with a pen can be hard).

I wonder if there is a better way to switch tools? Some initial ideas were:

  • Larger tool buttons.
  • A mode where button 2 toggles between predefined tools.
  • Gesture-based tool switching.

However, the idea I like the most is this:

When the user long presses then pen, a circle of tool icons appears around the pen. Drag the pen to the desired tool and release to select.

What do you think?

Thinking about it, it should be an elipse of tools, since you dont want any icons under the user's hand. There would need to be a left/right handed toggle too.

Maybe an additional side bar with large buttons for the touchscreen to toggle a tool for the pen as long the finger presses a specific button (i.e. pen becomes eraser as long as the finger presses the eraser button).
