Thank you for your input/ I think the documentation page is the right place to put it, however we are currently planning a remake of the documentations page, to page things easier to find. // Sascha On Fri, Oct 9, 2009 at 12:26 PM, Gergely Kis <ger...@ma...>wrote: > Hi, > > I am not a lawyer (only my wife is). Hi, I am not a lawyer (only my wife is). However, I think that you need some kind of legal entity called XMLVM so that the copyright laws can work. It may also depend on the country as well, but I think that forming some kind of legal entity is the right way to go. One possibility to avoid that is to use an already existing umbrella organization like Apache Foundation or the Software Freedom Law Center ( http://www.softwarefreedom.org/services/) However, this method would probably have an impact on the potential future commercialization of the project. Best Regards, Gergely 2009/10/7 Sascha Haeberling <sa...@xm...> > This is actually a good point Gergely, thanks for mentioning it. Panayotis, thanks for your patches. I have committed all three patches you've sent. I made some minor changes. First of all the directories are now called src/lib/iphone, src/lib/android, and src/app. I also had to do some other cleanup to make Xokoban compile again. Now I'm looking forward to your XCode project patch. That would be really nice. :-) Arno Panayotis Katsaloulis wrote: > this is for the android2iphone target. > > In order to be properly patched, the previous 2 patches should be present. > > You might also need to do something like -p1 in the patch command > > I'd be happy to discuss these patches and tell me what you think! > > > > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ > Come build with us! All files implementing the ObjectiveC-to-Java wrappers are located in the src/xmlvm2objc/compat-lib/objc folder. There are two files you need to implement these functions: java_lang_Math.h and java_lang_Math.m. Looking at the files' content you will note that all implemented methode follow our name mangling convention used as a workaround for the missing overloading in ObjectiveC. To implement the missing functions you also have to follow this convention. -- Wolfgang Joseph Rukshan Fonseka wrote: > Ok I tried to convert an android application to iphone and noticed > quite a few of the Maths functions don't compile such as > > Math.max() > Math.min() > Math.pow() > > I am guessing they aren't supported yet? Ok I tried to convert an android application to iphone and noticed quite a few of the Maths functions don't compile such as Math.max() Math.min() Math.pow() I am guessing they aren't supported yet? I would like to extend the Maths library to have these functions. Which file should I be looking at to add these? Regards, Rukshan Fonseka. |

The process how to properly submit a patch is described on the XMLVM site at http://xmlvm.org/contribute/ . Basically we use a code review portal at http://xmlvm-reviews.appspot.com/ to accept and review patches. And indeed - I also prefer to have the patches submitted there instead of being posted to the list. After merging a patch to the XMLVM HEAD a notification on the list about it would be a good thing anyway. -- Wolfgang Inderjeet Singh wrote: > Can the XMLVM team propose a process to submit patches without us > sending them to the entire list? Can the XMLVM team propose a process to submit patches without us sending them to the entire list? For example, we could open a bug and submit it that way, or mail them to a special alias. this is for the android2iphone target. In order to be properly patched, the previous 2 patches should be present. You might also need to do something like -p1 in the patch command I'd be happy to discuss these patches and tell me what you think! |

I created this patch, so that all files will not be in the same directory, which makes things difficult to understand what is happening. I am planning soon to give a patch which will create along with the Makefile, a Xcode project file, for easier import of the project to Xcode, thus I needed to make things more clear and more organized. |

Hello, here is a tiny patch which will fix some issues with build dependency in ant script, mostly for the cc-* targets. |

I just set up a test project and tried your code. As Arno pointed out you need AndroidManifest.xml and cat.png in directory where the makefile is stored. Additionally note that we currently only support png images resources. While trying you sample code I also noticed a small bug in XMLVM for which I submitted a patch to our SVN. So please update to the HEAD and try again. -- Wolfgang On Thu, Oct 8, 2009 at 10:19 AM, Arno Puder <ar...@pu...> wrote: > > did you import cat.png and AndroidManifest.xml to the XCode project (or > copy those to files to the directory where Makefile is generated in case > you are using the Makefile)? > > Arno > > > Joseph Rukshan Fonseka wrote: > > Hi, > > > > I was trying to play with xmlvm and see it working porting an android > > app to iphone. > > > > I wrote this simple android app which runs ok in the android emulator. > > > > package com.home.imageviewer; > > > > import android.app.Activity; > > import android.os.Bundle; > > import android.view.View; > > import android.view.ViewGroup.LayoutParams; > > import android.widget.AbsoluteLayout; > > import android.widget.ImageView; > > import android.widget.LinearLayout; > > > > public class ImageViewer extends Activity { > > /** Called when the activity is first created. */ > > @SuppressWarnings("deprecation") > > @Override > > public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { > > super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); > > > > > > > > AbsoluteLayout layout = new AbsoluteLayout(this); > > layout.setLayoutParams(new > > LayoutParams(LayoutParams.FILL_PARENT, LayoutParams.FILL_PARENT)); > > ImageView viewer = new ImageView(this); > > viewer.setImageResource(R.drawable.cat); > > layout.addView(viewer, new > > AbsoluteLayout.LayoutParams(AbsoluteLayout.LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT, > > AbsoluteLayout.LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT, 0, 60)); > > setContentView(layout); > > } > > } > > > > I think cross compiled it using xmlvm with android-on-iphone option > > following the instructions in manual.pdf. did you import cat.png and AndroidManifest.xml to the XCode project (or copy those to files to the directory where Makefile is generated in case you are using the Makefile)? yes, we do. We only accept a patch if the developer has signed a so-called Contributor License Agreement (CLA): http://www.xmlvm.org/contribute/cla.php Note that the text of our CLA is a verbatim copy of Apache's CLA. Many other Open Source projects use the same CLA, so no surprises here. Guys: we really want XMLVM to succeed so we will do our best to bring clarity to this issue. We will not do anything where we sense strong opposition from the community. I'm sure there is a middle ground. I'm currently in a different time zone than the rest of the core team but we'll put this on the top of our to-do list. That we *might* get the linking exception for free, if we contribute in a way you like (or you whink we merit it, you like us, or whatever, perhaps depending on your moods that day :-) is nice, but in most commercial contexts its necessary to make estimates, before really engaging. In this context it would be very nice with a clearly stated max cost against which one is guaranteed to get a seat with linking exception, for a specific major release. The exact "max price" would not be so important. I would expect that we never paid it, as there would probably be some things that we would need to improve in XMLVM, anyway. we currently don't generate correct Objective-C code if your Java class lives in the default namespace. Add a package definition at the front and try again. Why is that? Thanks~ |

Hi Arno, I hope the XMLVM team is maintaining copyrights appropriately to preserve their ability to grant linking exception or offer XMLVM under dual license. When you are accepting external contributions, are you asking them to assign copyrights to you as well (A fairly standard practice with company sponsored open-source projects). Hi, I was trying to play with xmlvm and see it working porting an android app to iphone. I wrote this simple android app which runs ok in the android emulator. package com.home.imageviewer; import android.app.Activity; import android.os.Bundle; import android.view.View; import android.view.ViewGroup.LayoutParams; import android.widget.AbsoluteLayout; import android.widget.ImageView; import android.widget.LinearLayout; public class ImageViewer extends Activity { /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @SuppressWarnings("deprecation") @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); AbsoluteLayout layout = new AbsoluteLayout(this); layout.setLayoutParams(new LayoutParams (LayoutParams.FILL_PARENT, LayoutParams.FILL_PARENT)); ImageView viewer = new ImageView(this); viewer.setImageResource(R.drawable.cat); layout.addView(viewer, new AbsoluteLayout.LayoutParams (AbsoluteLayout.LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT, AbsoluteLayout.LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT, 0, 60)); setContentView(layout); } } I think cross compiled it using xmlvm with android-on-iphone option following the instructions in manual.pdf. Also I think there should be some instructions for the newbies on how to add iphone frameworks to the project and also which ones are needed. As I had to spend some time to figure this out myself as it wasn't in the manual.pdf when following the steps. It successfully create iphone files. Well no errors were reported. I then ran make in this directory which compiled the iphone files and launched the iphone simulator. However when I run my application, it opens up a black window and then automatically shuts down. I ran it via xcode and this is what I get in the IDE 2009-10-08 09:43:21.988 test[6829:207] *** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '*** - [NSPlaceholderMutableString initWithString:]: nil argument' 2009-10-08 09:43:21.990 test[6829:207] Stack: ( 36152411, 2438119241, 36236347, 36236186, 588736, 145543, 42424, 41261, 41810, 9058 ) (gdb) Any ideas? I was careful to write an app using only the features I was confident were supported by the android compat library. Regards, Rukshan Fonseka. |

And from the earlier discussion it seems that the linking exception is not transferrable to others. (Transferrability would effectively defeat its purpose.) At the same time the XMLVM team is able to relicense the whole package under a commercial license. I am not saying that this is a problem, it is simply a property of a GPL/commercial project. Best Regards, Gergely |

well, Bjoern, as a quick note to your comment: you can never prevent someone making money with your contribution to an Open Source project. This is nothing unique to a dual licensing strategy. Redhat makes a lot of money using other's peoples work. Of course they provide a service on top of the packaging. That would be the same for us. I don't think anyone would just give money to the core team without asking for something in return (and by that I mean more than the linking exception). By giving you a linking exception for your contribution, you would be given the same chance of using XMLVM for your commercial ventures. Arno Björn Caroll wrote: > Time for me to enter the debate.
