What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Ripping CDs into AIFF or Flac using XLD Secure Ripper
2. Same pattern on Imac, MacBook and external CD reader
3. Reading speed generally 0.2-0.4x (one hour per song) with some occasional CDs reading at appropriate 3-4X speed
4. I have ripped 200+ CDs last year with same equipment. No problem. I have however upgraded OS since them on the two computers. May be the source of the problem?
5. Removed XLD and downloaded an older version. Same problem.

How about the reproducibility (always, sometimes, rarely, ...)?
True for most CDs

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Taking 1+ hour per song instead of 10 minutes per CD

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Version 20131102 (145.0).  Mac OSX 10.6.8

Please provide any additional information below.

Can you attach a screenshot of the CD Rip preference tab?

The situation is now resolved. I can't explain what has changed, but the speed is now good on my two computers

I wish you had found, and described, a solution for this issue!
Today, Dec 27, 2019, iMac-High Sierra, and the very same problem shows up.
External and internal drives rip extremately slowly.

This happened to me as well, but also resulted in the AccurateRip almost never matching. I had “Use C2 error pointers (drive support is required)” checked (without knowing if my drive supported it, but assuming that XLD would let me know if it didn’t). After unchecking said checkbox and also Setting “Drive Speed Control” to “Limit to 1x” ripping was speedy again.

So if you have “Use C2 error pointers (drive support is required)” already unchecked, you might try setting “Drive Speed Control” to “Limit to 1x”. Strangely that fixes the problem for me, but doesn’t actually restrict the ripping speed to 1x … a complete cd is ripped in less than 10 minutes.
