I used to use XBMP with Samba2.x without any problems.
I recently changed distros and also moved to Samba3.0,
and XBMP's SMB doesn't seem to work anymore. When I
goto list the files, nothing appears in the list.
The samba log files spits out the following:

I've checked permissions, etc etc which are all
correct. My WInXP box connects to these samba3.0 shares
without problems.
I can get XBMP working fine streaming from WinXP, but
Samba3.0 seems to be a problem. Not sure if this is a
samba problem or a libsmb one.

Same problem here with Samba-3.0.1
Works with Win-Boxes but not for xbmp. Same shares/same
login/pass.

This is because your samba server either doesnt have
a "security= " parameter set in the smb.conf (so it defaults to
user level auth--windows likes this) or you have it explicitly
set to security=user/server/or something else. I have only
gotten XBMP to work when I set it to "security=share".
I think this is a problem with XBMP. This problem is especially
annoying if you have windows XP boxes that try to connect
to the samba server--they cannot access share level
security servers.
