I have to support solaris, linux and windows on 32 and 64 bit machines. The wrapper executable and native library comes in 32 and 64 bit versions for those OSs. What I need is the ability during an installation to know what the machine (the hardware) architecture is, 32 or 64 bit. I need to be able to know this from within a java process (actually an Ant task). I discovered today on my 64 bit workstation that if I run java 1.4.x, a 32 bit java, then the system property os.arch has the value i386 but if I run java 1.5.x the os.arch has the value amd64 --- os.arch does not give the hardware architecture but rather the java vm architecture. In order to install the correct version of the wrapper executable and native libaray I need the true hardware architecture independent of what jvm I will be running. Any thoughts as to how to get this information using just java? Richard -- This email message is for the sole use of the intended recipient(s) and may contain confidential information. I'm trying to configure a profiler agent for use with my wrapped service but the agents share library isn't being found. I added : wrapper.java.library.path.x=3D/opt/jprofiler4/bin/linux_x64 which contains libjprofilerti.so and wrapper.java.additional.x=3D-agentlib:jprofilerti to my wrapper config file. However when I try and start my service it fail because it can't find the shared library. I'm doing this on Linux and I've tried setting the environment var LD_LIBRARY_PATH and running ldconfig /opt/jprofiler4/bin/linux_x64 to make sure that the library can be found but nothing has worked. Any suggestions? |

I always thought that when you have a windows service, the user the service runs as was the system account. If this is the case, then it will likely be the lack of network permissions associated with your machines system account and the network file share. Try posting your log file as well, and we should all be able to get a better understanding of what is going on. Many thanks, David Hayes _____ From: wra...@li... Leif, What I'd suggest is that the default be LOG_USER, but allow for the user to specify any of the LOG_LOCAL0 through LOG_LOCAL7 vaules instead of LOG_USER. This would provide the ability to redirect the wrapper logs if desired. If I could, for example, have wrapper write everything out to LOG_LOCAL3, then it would be a simple matter for me to modify my /etc/syslog.conf so that anything corresponding to LOG_LOCAL3 gets redirected to it's own file or to a remote loghost. All I'd need to do is add one of the following: local3.* /var/log/wrapper.log or local3.* @loghost I wouldn't recommend allowing any of the other values since they're meant for other specific uses. -Bruce On 5/10/06, Leif Mortenson <le...@ta...> wrote: > > Bruce, > I will admit some ignorance in this area. I was able to get it going. There is no HPUX-IA64 Makefile so I had to
kind of "roll my own". The pthread_create gave me a clue. I had to add
-lpthread to the Makefile and it appears to be working (at least I don't
get the timer thread error).
The other thing I had to do to get it to build was to specify
-Dsun.arch.data.model=3D64 after build64.sh. If I didn't do that I was
getting bit mismatch errors. This might be something helpful in a
readme somewhere. So I think I may have made some progress. =20

Subject: Re: [Wrapper-user] Timer Thread not created on HPUX IA64
Bill,
I was hoping someone else might have some information on this. I=20
unfortunately
do not have any HPUX systems to test with personally. I reviewed the=20
man page
for the pthread_create command on HP-UX and everything appears to be
fine.
http://www.calpoly.edu/cgi-bin/man-cgi?pthread_create+3
What does the man page on your actual system say?
The relevant code follows:
---
void *timerRunner(void *arg) {
/* snip */
return NULL;
}
int initializeTimer() {
int res;
res =3D pthread_create(
&timerThreadId,
NULL, /* No attributes. */
timerRunner,
NULL); /* No parameters need to be passed to the thread. */
if (res) {
log_printf(WRAPPER_SOURCE_WRAPPER, LEVEL_FATAL,
"Unable to create a timer thread: %d, %s", res,
getLastErrorText());
return 1;
} else {
return 0;
}
}
---
Cheers,
Leif

I agree and disagree. I don't think the wrapper should set its ping to =20 0 if debug is set, but I do think it should not restart when debug is =20 set. Maybe record in in the log file that it timed out, but due to =20 debug existing, the application won't be restarted, unless there is =20 some super-sexy way of finding out from the debugged application that =20 the wrapper thread (and others depending upon the debugger that =20 connects to it) has been debug paused. My thoughts at least! Cheers again Leif! I think wrapper should set ping timeout to zero if -Xdebug and -Xrunjdwp .... option is set for JVMDI supporting VMs. And print out this as warning. It should also do the same when -agentlib:jdwp... option is set for newer JVMTI supporting VMs. Otherwise, it will always result in surprised user. I have resolved my problem. I had a problem in my application because I
was using System.getProperty("user.home") and it is home of system not
mine! So I had to change a lot of things that use my user.home.
Thank you for helping me!

Delphine,
Sorry I didn't write you app so it is difficult to help. When run=20
as a service, the
Wrapper runs as the System user rather than as the user you are logged=20
in as when
running in the console. Most likely there are some environment=20
differences that are
causing you problems.
As you are not seeing the JVM in jconsole when run as a service, my=20
first guess
is that you are maybe running a different JVM. Try setting the Java=20
command in
the wrapper file to be absolute to the java command rather than using=20
the path or
environment variables.
Cheers,
Leif

Leif,
No problem on the delay. I experienced this on both AIX 5.2 and SLES 9.
I am starting from a slightly modified wrapper sh script. I apparently
did the same thing you did with the escaped quotes, and got the same
result - the echo would look correct, but the quotes would be stripped
when executing the command line. I would agree that this is happening at
the shell level, and is not a problem with the wrapper. I posted a work
around using environment variable expansion a few days ago; it's not an
optimal solution, but it is working for us.
Thanks,
Chris

Subject: Re: [Wrapper-user] Problems with spaces in property values
Chris,
Sorry for the delay. I tried the following on Linux and it works=20
perfectly.
bin/wrapper ../conf/wrapper.conf=20
"wrapper.java.additional.1=3D-Djava.rmi.server.codebase=3Dftp:<host>/jar1=
.ja
r=20
ftp:<host>/jar2.jar"
Removing the quotes would of course not work.
Are you running from within a shell script or something else which
could
possibly be effecting things? What kind of *nix box are you running
on?
I tested this with 3.2.0 of the Wrapper.
Running this is the wrapper sh script does appear to be having=20
problems. In my script,
I do the following:
COMMAND_LINE=3D"$CMDNICE $WRAPPER_CMD $WRAPPER_CONF=20
wrapper.syslog.ident=3D$APP_NAME wrapper.pidfile=3D$PIDFILE $ANCHORPROP=20
$LOCKPROP=20
\"wrapper.java.additional.1=3D-Djava.rmi.server.codebase=3Dftp:<host>/jar=
1.j
ar=20
ftp:<host>/jar2.jar\""
echo $COMMAND_LINE
exec $COMMAND_LINE
Escaping the nested quotes causes the echo to appear correct. But=20
those quotes in the
actual command are being stripped when the command is actually=20
executed. It appears
this is happening at the shell level and not actually a problem with the
wrapper process.
More a but in the shell script if anything.
Anyone have any ideas?
Cheers,
Leif

Delphine,
Sorry I didn't write you app so it is difficult to help. When run
as a service, the
Wrapper runs as the System user rather than as the user you are logged
in as when
running in the console. Most likely there are some environment
differences that are
causing you problems.
As you are not seeing the JVM in jconsole when run as a service, my
first guess
is that you are maybe running a different JVM. Try setting the Java
command in
the wrapper file to be absolute to the java command rather than using
the path or
environment variables.
Cheers,
Leif

When I ran my service with the app.bat, it works, I see the jvm to
connect to in the jconsole, but when I ran with net start "Indexation
Application" I don't see anything in the jconsole so I can't connect.
In fact my application is an indexing thread. The application launch a
Timer and then the thread wait for the good time to index. (maybe it may
help you to help me)

Delphine,
According to the log, the Wrapper has called your application's main
method:
be.microresearch.scheduler.MainService and it completed without any=20
problems.
There are still non daemon threads running so the Wrapper believes that
your
application is running normally.
Why it works in console mode, but not when run as a service? I=20
can't say.
But it appears to be something that is happening within your
application.
You are using 1.5.0. So the jconsole tool should be available. Add
the
wrapper.java.additional.1=3D-Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote property to
your wrapper.conf. Then rerun your service. Once it is up and in this=20
state,
launch jconsole and then connect to the JVM using JMX. If you look at
the
threads page, you should be able to tell what your various threads are=20
up to.
Cheers,
Leif

Brian,
I have not yet had a chance to try it out personally. Will try to
do that over the
next few days. Has anyone else had any experience with 1.6?

Bruce,
I will admit some ignorance in this area. Currently I am using the
LOG_USER
facility. The code is as follows:
openlog( loginfoSourceName, LOG_PID | LOG_NDELAY, LOG_USER );
syslog( eventType, "%s", szBuff );
closelog( );
Looking at the man page for openlog I see a large number of facility
values.
What do you suggest here? Would making it possible to configure any of them
be recommended? Setting the facility appears to decide which log file
the message
ends up in.
How do you normally configure a remote logging host.
Cheers,
Leif

Chris,
Sorry for the delay. I tried the following on Linux and it works
perfectly.
bin/wrapper ../conf/wrapper.conf
"wrapper.java.additional.1=-Djava.rmi.server.codebase=ftp:<host>/jar1.jar
ftp:<host>/jar2.jar"
Removing the quotes would of course not work.
Are you running from within a shell script or something else which could
possibly be effecting things? What kind of *nix box are you running on?
I tested this with 3.2.0 of the Wrapper.
Running this is the wrapper sh script does appear to be having
problems. In my script,
I do the following:
COMMAND_LINE="$CMDNICE $WRAPPER_CMD $WRAPPER_CONF
wrapper.syslog.ident=$APP_NAME wrapper.pidfile=$PIDFILE $ANCHORPROP
$LOCKPROP
\"wrapper.java.additional.1=-Djava.rmi.server.codebase=ftp:<host>/jar1.jar
ftp:<host>/jar2.jar\""
echo $COMMAND_LINE
exec $COMMAND_LINE
Escaping the nested quotes causes the echo to appear correct. But
those quotes in the
actual command are being stripped when the command is actually
executed. It appears
this is happening at the shell level and not actually a problem with the
wrapper process.
More a but in the shell script if anything.
Anyone have any ideas?

Bill,
I was hoping someone else might have some information on this. I
unfortunately
do not have any HPUX systems to test with personally. I reviewed the
man page
for the pthread_create command on HP-UX and everything appears to be fine.
http://www.calpoly.edu/cgi-bin/man-cgi?pthread_create+3
What does the man page on your actual system say?
The relevant code follows:
---
void *timerRunner(void *arg) {
/* snip */
return NULL;
}
int initializeTimer() {
int res;
res = pthread_create(
&timerThreadId,
NULL, /* No attributes. */
timerRunner,
NULL); /* No parameters need to be passed to the thread. */
if (res) {
log_printf(WRAPPER_SOURCE_WRAPPER, LEVEL_FATAL,
"Unable to create a timer thread: %d, %s", res,
getLastErrorText());
return 1;
} else {
return 0;
}
}
---

Leif

Chandra,
It was easy to implement so this will be in the next release.
3.2.1 has some other enhancements to the command line as well. You
will be able to run either "wrapper -v" or "wrapper --version" on both
Windows and UNIX versions.

Hi,
I Made some further progress. I switched to the Sun VM 1.4.2_08 and it
works fine. Looks like the problem is something to do with Jrocket
1.4.2_08. I have used Jrocket 1.4.2_05 successfully with Wrapper on
another project so I may try that.=20
Has anyone else had problems or been able to use Jrocket 1.4.2_08?
Cheers

Subject: Re: [Wrapper-user] Wrapper - error starting service
Philip,
Ouch. Sorry no ideas off the top of my head. It looks the like JVM
process is crashing immediately after it is launched. None of the
java-side wrapper code appears to have had a chance to initialize.
Try adding the "-verbose" JVM argument. That might tell you a
little more about what the JVM is trying to do at the time it crashes.
Try setting the account that the wrapper runs as to be the same as
the one you are logged in as when running in a console.

Delphine,
The log you posted shows me that you ran in a console successfully
then killed the
app by pressing CTRL-C.
You then launch the app as a service. It appears to be starting
fine but that is all of
the log that you included. Is that everything? I am not able to see
what happens next.
You are not getting the "Scheduler started" message.
If that is your full log file, try setting the wrapper.debug=true
property and running
it again. Your application may be getting stuck as it attempts to
launch the "Scheduler"
for some reason.
Cheers,
Leif
