HP M1536dnf MFP Printer

I installed the HP M1536dnf printer and it prints ok after installation. However, Winux won't communicate with the scanner. I also tried installing the HP full printer app using WINE. However, the app will fail when it gets to the step where it is trying to communicate with the scanner. Has anyone had any luck with the scanner on this printer, or, with the scanner on any HP Multifunction printer scanner?
Forgot to mention that the connection is by USB cable direct to computer, not wireless or ethernet.
