[Webct-admins] Blackboard Vista extent size question

Our concern is that the following segment is in too many extents:

Segment Name:	CMS_FL_CNT_CONTENT_LOB_SEG
Segment Type:	LOBSEGMENT
Tablespace:		WEBCT_LOB
Size in Bytes:	181,636,431,872
No. of Extents:	346,444

We have never heard of a segment with this many
extents (regardless of object type).

We noticed that the locally-managed tablespace WEBCT_LOB in our  
production
database has a uniform extent size of 512K.  The tablespace which was  
added
later, PORTFOLIO_LOB, has a uniform extent size of 131072K (256 times as
large).  The WEBCT_LOB tablespace in our development database, which was
created later (because we re-created it as a 10g database), also has a
uniform extent size of 131072K.  This suggests to me that Blackboard
realized that the extents for the LOB segments should be sized larger,  
so
that there wouldn't be so many of them.

Our  question is:  At what point might this object become unmanageable?
Should we attempt to resize this object?

It's weird that your prod and development are so different. We were beta testers and early adopters of CE6 (Vista 4). All our tablespaces have datafiles of 4gig (test and prod). Our production database is 500gig. The WEBCT_LOB table space is 296gig of that and consists of 74 4gig files.

The size of these files should have come from the WebCT provided template used when DBCA was run to create the database, unless your DBA's changed it.

If you plan to migrate to NG, the LOB space won't be part of the database any longer, but somehow part of the filesystem (or so I've been told). To change now would likely require an export/import of the tablespace which might take a very long amount of dedicated time.

Blackboard owns Xythos....that is the underlying architecture for the Bb 
Content system / Academic Suite today.

Actually I can't offer much more. My info comes from discussions between Scott Kodai and myself on multiple occasions. From a design standpoint, having binary files (word docs, pics, powerpoints, etc.) as part of the database is not a great design. Evidently the Blackboard product suite does not store such files in the database, so it is expected NG will be the same. I like that concept since my DB size will be drastically reduced and likely easier to manage.

>From an OS viewpoint I'm not sure how the binary files are managed in a multi-node configuration (ie. where in the cluster are the files kept). Is there some other kind of shared filesystem used?
