I recently installed webmin on a server and when I attempt to access the server it quickly spawns several processes which eat up all the memory until the server locks up. I can sometimes kill the webmin process before the server locks up. This seems pretty serious. Clearly webmin is in some kind of infinite loop. Any help would be greatly appreciated. You aren't the first person to report this, but I have been unable to re-produce it on my own systems in order to solve it. I suspect it may be triggered by certain browsers .. which browser are you using, and does it still happen if you try a different one? - Jamie Andrew Kornak wrote: > I recently installed webmin on a server and when I attempt to access > the server it quickly spawns several processes which eat up all the > memory until the server locks up. I apologize, I should have mentioned that I have used webmin with IE and tried Netscape 7 now to verify it wasn't a browser issue. I will try other browsers if you think it is still a browser issue. But, I personally don't believe it's a browser issue. -Andrew ----- Original Message ----- From: "Andrew Kornak" <ak...@ra...> To: <web...@li...> Sent: Tuesday, September 10, 2002 9:11 PM Subject: Re: webmin-0.990-1 spawns several processes and locks server > I just tried it with netscape 7.0 and the same thing happened. > Server almost died before I killed the browser and stopped webmin. > > -Andrew > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Jamie Cameron" <jca...@we...> > To: <web...@li...> > Sent: Tuesday, September 10, 2002 8:33 PM > Subject: Re: webmin-0.990-1 spawns several processes and locks server > > > > You aren't the first person to report this, but I have been unable to > > re-produce it on my own systems in order to solve it. This one is a weird issue, and one that I've seen quite a few times now, but haven't reproduced it lately myself (but I still have a client that can trigger it on his machine--while I cannot). I was able to make it happen in the past with Netscape 6.0, but these days, neither Mozilla or current Netscape makes it happen for me. Another client /always/ has about 25 Webmin processes on his machine, and I don't know where they're coming from. Darnedest thing I've seen in a while... Jamie, would it be possible to get a forced timeout on child miniserv.pl processes if they don't do something for some number of minutes? It is just a simple 'process per connection' server, isn't it? I know that webmin spawning processes that don't end can cause it to hang around, but if after 5 minutes something hasn't returned, the browser has probably timed out the request already anyway. So no use waiting for a long process if there will be no one around to see it finish. Just a thought. This might be a good short-term fix, except, my server spawns several webmin processes in short order which brings the server down in about 5-10 seconds (not minutes). Initially, I thought perhaps I was short of memory. I added memory and webmin sucked it right up. Not a memory problem. -Andrew ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joe Cooper" <jo...@sw...> To: <web...@li...> Sent: Tuesday, September 10, 2002 9:41 PM Subject: Re: webmin-0.990-1 spawns several processes and locks server > This one is a weird issue, and one that I've seen quite a few times now, > but haven't reproduced it lately myself (but I still have a client that > can trigger it on his machine--while I cannot). > > I was able to make it happen in the past with Netscape 6.0, but these > days, neither Mozilla or current Netscape makes it happen for me. > Another client /always/ has about 25 Webmin processes on his machine, > and I don't know where they're coming from. Goodness! That's not the same issue I'm seeing at all. That's crazy talk, Andrew! I think you must have a very badly behaved module on your hands. How about doing a Webmin session without touching any non-standard modules and seeing what happens. I can't imagine any of the standard modules would behave that way. The problem I've seen is pretty controllable--and only leads to big trouble with one of my own modules (my troublemaker accesses a number of remote servers and gathers information from them, and then reloads after 30 seconds and does it all over again infinitely many times). I have never seen a Webmin go evil like that before. Joe, I am only running the standard webmin. I assume there are no non-standard webmin modules running from the rpm install. The fact is, I haven't touched this server with webmin in the past. I have heard from others with this problem, and they are just using the standard webmin with no extra modules.. It seems to be a problem with miniserv.pl , not with the module code. The annoying thing is that I have been able to connect to the machines of people who had the problem, without triggering it myself! That leads me to suspect that it is browser or maybe network-latency related. Andrew - what kind of connection is there between your browser and the webmin server? Are they on the same machine, connected via a LAN, on over the internet? > The problem I've seen is pretty controllable--and only leads to big > trouble with one of my own modules (my troublemaker accesses a number of > remote servers and gathers information from them, and then reloads after > 30 seconds and does it all over again infinitely many times). I have > never seen a Webmin go evil like that before. In your case, you might want to try disabling keep-alives in webmin, which will return it to the one-process-per-request behaviour. You can do this by adding the line nokeepalive=1 to /etc/webmin/miniserv.conf and then re-starting. I'm going to look into a patch to have miniserv.pl proceses exit after 10 minutes, even if the client browser is till connected. It's tricky though, as IE can get annoyed sometimes if the server just disconnects like that. - Jamie > Andrew Kornak wrote: > >> This might be a good short-term fix, except, my server spawns several >> webmin processes in short order which brings the server down in about >> 5-10 seconds (not minutes). Jamie, I am connecting to a server from a remote location on the internet. I have a broadband internet service provider and the server is on a T1. No, most of the servers have RedHat 7.0, and some have 7.2. One is 6.2. The problem server uses 7.0. No modifications were made except for various security updates which were replicated across all the servers. -Andrew ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jamie Cameron" <jca...@we...> To: <web...@li...> Sent: Wednesday, September 11, 2002 5:02 AM Subject: Re: webmin-0.990-1 spawns several processes and locks server > Interesting .. is there any different between the working and > non-working servers, such as a different distribution or kernel version? > > - Jamie > > Andrew Kornak wrote: > > > Jamie, > > > > I am connecting to a server from a remote location on the internet. > > I have a broadband internet service provider and the server is on > > a T1. If it happened with both those browsers then I doubt it is browser-specific .. When it happens, does webmin spawn a huge number of subprocesses? Or it is just a few that are eating up lots of memory .. - Jamie Andrew Kornak wrote: > I apologize, I should have mentioned that I have used webmin with > IE and tried Netscape 7 now to verify it wasn't a browser issue. From what I could tell, only two webmin processes are running. I seem to remember many more before. Perhaps I couldn't view the processes in time before the server locked. Now, only two run. Only one browser session was run. The whole session follows: [root@www sysconfig]# ps -ax PID TTY STAT TIME COMMAND 1 ? S 0:08 init [3] 2 ? SW 0:04 [kflushd] 3 ? SW 3:24 [kupdate] 4 ? I've seen many posts for firewall modules and I myself is looking for a firewall module for ipfw. I've noticed they have one for ipchains. Any chance adding this module to the wishlist? cheers, nick |

Jamie - When I run the "shell-in-a-box" using Netscape (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:0.9.4) Gecko/20011128 Netscape6/6.2.1) & Java, I cannot connect to a server.. it just hangs with the "Press 'Connect' to start ... " ... when I click on "CONNECT" it just depresses the connect button and doesn't do anything. I *can* successfully use IE 6.0.26 to connect to my ssh server with shell in a box. -An aside, why isn't this included with the default install of webmin? Thanks !! Tim |

Try using the 'Webma=EDl' Upgrade feature. It even gives you an option t= o delete the old one. You can access the tool from "Webmin Configuration -> Upgrade Webmin and make sure you check the box next to "Delete old version's directory after upgrade" and hit Upgrade Webmin. It checks the latest version and upgrades it if it deems it necessary. If you are worrying about losing users, dont. The upgrade is fully automated including the moving of the users from the old version to the latest. Cheers. Our Junkmail said: > How does one upgrade webmin w/out losing all the > userid info, etc.? After upgrading to the most recent - I see errors relating to obtaining = locks on three different files - I lost the page, but believe they all = related to the RPM database on this RedHat 7.3 machine. Is this anything I should investigate? Mike |

Hi...I've been having lots of troubles with webmin latly. I have 3 boxes running (the latest) version and 2 are being bad. On my radhat 8 box...random pages won't be avialble. Such as when I try to edit and then save changes to httpd.conf or other apache conf files. I have a (non admin) acount on a redhat 9 box, and that won't even let me log in, I just get page not found. And then on my redhat 7.3 box everything works fine... Um...what's up? Previously on my redhat 8 box webmin worked perfectly... Is it the latest release? or maybe something with miniserv? Please help -ben |
