#5219 cant upgrade from 1.890 to 1.900 on CentOS 5.11

Within webmin 1.890 I get the system info page "upgrade webmin now" button. I click it and get the following:

I try this:

rpm -U webmin-1.900-1.noarch.rpm

It seems neither method is working. Any ideas?

CentOS 5 reached end of life nearly two years ago; there's no more maintenance happening from the CentOS folks, so it is no longer safe to run CentOS 5. The RPM version in CentOS 5 doesn't support newer format RPMs. Jamie continued to use the old format for a while, but at some point we have to move forward.
I'd strongly recommend you migrate to a new system running a maintained Linux distribution. CentOS 7 will be supported until, I think, 2023, so it would be a great choice.
Unfortunately, commercial software from Icom will not run on CentOS 6 or
higher. Last workable version is 5.11.
this is a fact of life that certain applications which people require need
certain OS versions and do not have the luxury to upgrade OSes ad nauseam.
How do I set some webmin config to disable this initial info page from
showing the "upgrade webmin now" and having the "newer version" stuff at
the top not shown?
So, now we can announce to the world that webmin 1.900 will not run on
CentOS 5.11. 1.890 is the last operable version.

I don't know who Icom is, but you should file a ticket with them, if their software doesn't run on a maintained version of CentOS/RHEL.. They're the ones doing you wrong, here. ;-)
I don't think it's reasonable to assume new versions of software should run on very old versions of operating systems...if you're OK with old software, then old versions of Webmin should also be fine. You can disable notifications about updates in Webmin->Webmin Configuration->Index Page Options->Show Webmin updates on System Information page?
Icom, Motorola, Vertex, Kenwood, Yaesu and more all make commercial software for programming radios. Pretty much all of the software products over the years are stuck on OS versions at the time, DOS, Win98, Win, Linux. Since the radios still are in operation then the software is still required to run. We who program these radios must keep and maintain these old OSes in order to support the radios. It is entirely possible that your local police and fire are faced with this problem. This is just one category of software that has to live a very long life. There are many more.
Obviously, I will remain at webmin 1.890 since 1.900 will not run on CentOS 5.11. I wouldn't have reported the issue if I didn't like and use this good tool. I run webmin on 3 different OS platforms on multiple release levels. I really like it and promote it to many others.

Ah, OK, understood. Be careful with that server, then! That's scary, I hope it's not connected to the Internet, especially not directly, but even with a firewall I'd be nervous about it.
Would it be possible to run the old OS in a VM, so you only use the old OS for that one specific task? (Then again, I guess if the machine is dedicated to the task of only managing radios, it's fine as long as you're super careful.)

I have the same problem with Novell SLES 9.4 server. I suppose that the cause is the same as in Rich's case but I would like to know for sure. Please advise...
If it's the same error, it's the same problem.
Also, SLES 9 reached end of life four years ago! What are you guys doing? You're playing with fire running unmaintained operating systems. Super dangerous, especially if connected to the internet.
Also, y'all could try installing from the tarball but the Perl version you have is probably too old for some stuff. We now target 5.10, as the oldest distribution still being maintained is CentOS 6 and that's the Perl version it has.
Thanks Joe, you are absolutely right but I have to work with what I have. My server is on intranet and I believe that it is not too much exposed to the threats from the wild.
I am not happy about the situation but the things are like: "If it works, don't break it."
