Hi Folks,

It's also worth making sure that your system has enough memory to run. In the past, I allocated so much memory to Solr that the system got neglected. In trying to cope, it shut down Java. In my case, actually reducing the amount of memory allocated to Solr helped.

You might try restarting at more frequent intervals. When I was experiencing memory issues on an older server, I had to restart every couple of hours or it'd blow up. Moving to a new, more powerful, server allowed me to cut it back to once a day.

The short answer is that this is an out of memory error, so throwing more memory at the JVM might help.

It's also possible that trying a different garbage collection strategy might help. My blog post from a while back has some information on this:

A little research suggests that in some cases, changing your Solr cache settings may help. Perhaps the ongoing performance testing work going on at Keystone Library Network will shed some light on best practices; you might want to join the developer's call next Tuesday morning if your schedule allows to hear the latest update on that.

Here is the error, message we are getting. We are still on VuFind 1.3.

And I believe this eventually brings down the catalog, and forces a connection refused message.
