Demian, Here you go: https://support.google.com/calendar/answer/2690797?hl=en but... haven't tried yet (I confess, I just googled it). Gonna stop here (now), 2am over here. Tech Subject: Re: [VuFind-Tech] [VuFind-General] Developers Call Minutes - 5/28/13 That's unfortunate about Wimba's internals. Regarding Hangouts, I haven't used it beyond a quick experiment several months ago. Is there a way to create a standing URL for people to join in, or does it require invitations? If we end up switching over, I'm just trying to think about logistical issues.... - Demian ________________________________ From: Joe Atzberger [jo...@bo...] Sent: Tuesday, May 28, 2013 8:42 PM To: Demian Katz Cc: vuf...@li...<mailto:vuf...@li...> Tech Subject: Re: [VuFind-Tech] [VuFind-General] Developers Call Minutes - 5/28/13 Several months ago when I looked into Wimba's internals, I remember seeing some hardcoded expectations of a 32-bit environment (like a 32-bit lib). For whatever reason, those don't cause windows 64-bit clients to explode (probably b/c they aren't used), but it was the kind of thing that I was not going to be able to fix on an apparently 3+ years stale proprietary project (where I'm not even a customer). I'm happy to say Hangouts works fine for me and we use it internally. As for Wimba, I agree that it's odd that it has so much trouble when it's running under Java... but it seems that the problems all have to do with audio, so maybe there's some bundled library that isn't properly platform independent. - Demian ________________________________ From: Filipe MS Bento (UA) [fs...@ua...<mailto:fs...@ua...>] Sent: Tuesday, May 28, 2013 4:59 PM To: Demian Katz Cc: Joe Atzberger; vuf...@li...<mailto:vuf...@li...> Tech Subject: Re: [VuFind-Tech] [VuFind-General] Developers Call Minutes - 5/28/13 Hi! One of these days we should give Google Hangouts a go! You never know, perhaps we will be surprised (my elected service for "informal" remote assistance, how-tos, sharing the desktop or any particular "window" for that matter). And a bonus: possibility of automatic "recording" to youtube (private or public available) --- live cast feature: well, no need to go so further. This without any prejudice to Demian's brilliant minutes (VuFind archive of them) -- video will never replace the written word (even with youtube voice recognition and transciption -- works well with English native speakers, the rest of use... not so well -- have to improve our english speaking skills / correct pronunciation). Nevertheless, since Wimba is pure Java (runs under JRE), it's quiet strange why those errors do appear under Linux (any flavour, if it is update)... Hopefully we'll find out shortly! We're using Wimba because Villanova University has the service and lets me use it, and if you can actually successfully connect to it, it is quite nice - more stable than Skype for large groups, and with nice chat/whiteboard features. However, as I say, you're not the first person to have trouble getting in, and that is a significant problem. If you have any suggestions for an alternate platform, I'm willing to experiment. Also, if the only problem is that your audio isn't working, we have had calls in the past where we did chat-only because of attendees having audio problems. This is not ideal, but I'm certainly willing to do it in the interest of getting more conversation going. Having tested in chrome and Firefox, it seems that Wimba is non-functional and officially "unsupported" on Ubuntu (12.10). I've tried some forum-posted workarounds from 2010 without success. The error is: Wimba Classroom v6.2.2-a.b (error 294) Video Capture Scanning Error Fatal error encountered while scanning for video capture devices Strangely enough that occurs first during the audio-test portion of the self-check. Besides running wine/windows (sorta ridiculous for devs of a primarily linux-deployed app.), has anybody else been able to get wimba running on a modern-ish 64-bit linux? If not, can we consider some alternative technologies for conferencing? --joe ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Introducing AppDynamics Lite, a free troubleshooting tool for Java/.NET Get 100% visibility into your production application - at no cost.
