I'm pretty sure that you are correct -- VuFind should fully support MARCXML without problems. I believe the only issue you might run into is that, if you store the MARCXML "raw" rather than having it converted to binary as part of the SolrMarc import process, your Solr responses will be larger, which will increase the chances of PHP running out of memory when retrieving large result sets (i.e. 100 records to the page). It's definitely worth doing some experiments to confirm the theory that this will work -- hopefully the behavior should be fairly easy to test (just load an XML record through SolrMarc, then do a raw retrieval by ID through the Solr admin interface to see exactly how the record is represented in the stored fullrecord field). If you see anything unexpected, please let me know! - Demian ________________________________________ From: Tod Olson [to...@uc...] Sent: Wednesday, September 26, 2012 2:29 PM To: vuf...@li... Subject: [VuFind-Tech] Loading records in MARCXML vs MARC? Is VuFind tied to MARC (or really, ISO 2709), or can it equally well load MARCXML? (This comes up in the context of some other system development.) I think that solrmarc would be happy to import MARCXML, and that as long as the import properties set "fullrecord = FullRecordAsMarc", all will be well. I suspect that there would be problems in the templates if for some reason one were to set "fullrecord = FullRecordAsXML" Does that sound right, that importing MARCXML would pose no problem for VuFind, as long as we continue to store it as MARC in 'fullrecord'? Secondarily (and of much less importance) if one did want to store the full record as MARCXML, how extensive of a problem would that be?
