[I use vpamm due to the vesa bug]
When I switch to another program (e.g. alt-tab) and then go back the video is an undecipherable mess and I can just press alt-x to leave. Just to point it out. pf

Try Shift-V. If that alone does not help, try enabling 'BadVideoOrMouse' in vpa.ini, [system] section.
VPA cannot detect that it is put into the background or brought back.

Do you use VPA with "/s"? If yes, I'm still not out of things to try (actually it might even be that shift-v doesn't do anything in this case).
