Situation: I am neither Colonies nor Birdmen; Colonies
are my ally. I have a combat VCR that shows up like this
in VPA:
--------------------------------
Colonial vs Bird Man
ship #209 ship #62
209 Razvedka
/Destroyed/
--------------------------------
Now if there happens to be more than one ship
destroyed this turn called "Razvedka" then hitting "M" to
go to the map location of that battle may take you to
the wrong coordinates - it goes to the coordinates of
the first "distress call" message of a ship by that name:
First in sequence is this message:
--------------------------------
(-x0002)<< Long Range Sensors >>
Distress call and explosion
detected from a starship at:
( 2712 , 2803 )
The name of the ship was the:
Razvedka
--------------------------------
And then a few messages later:
--------------------------------
(-x0004)<< Long Range Sensors >>
Distress call and explosion
detected from a starship at:
( 1388 , 1731)
The name of the ship was the:
Razvedka
--------------------------------
The above battle actually took place at (1388,1731),
but the (M)ap takes me to (2712,2803).
Perhaps it would be better to extract battle coordinates
from where the winning ship is now, rather than where a
ship of the same name as the destroyed ship is reported.
If the winning ship was also destroyed, either the
location of the ship that destroyed it can be used
(etc.), or simply fall back to the current system.

Not enough data to do this.

How is there not enough data? The combat should have taken place at the current position of either ship #209 or #62 (whichever one was not destroyed). If they were both destroyed, or the current position of the enemy ship that won the battle is unknown, then falling back to the current system is fine.
