I do not leave the shortcut menu - doing so leaves the inexperienced user the ability to change the password when they are logged in alone and that defeats the purpose of the remote admin - each of the users on my network is aware that they can, and are, remote accessed when they call for help - there is no insidious reason for disabling the tray except that I do not want them to be able to initiate connections and send their desktops out to unauthorized users - I had limited the allowed connections with the "AuthHosts" but that did not prevent the issue if someone knew the location of the path to winvnc.exe and ran it in listen mode... -----Original Message----- From: Nicholas Basso [mailto:ge...@ya...] Sent: Thursday, November 28, 2002 10:33 PM To: vnc...@li... Subject: Re: Hiding the SysTray Icon On that topic: It does if the user is unaware they are running VNC. In which case I would like to know why they did this to their registry. =) (BTW for those of you who think this keeps you from accessing the configuration, I do believe it is accessible from a shortcut in the start menu folder for VNC, "Show User Settings") Now, if the user was NOT the one to do this, there are one of two options: 1. The sysadmin did it on a shared machine for security reasons, for example within an office or school. This is not a security threat, in fact this is the exact thing this whole deal was designed for. Nothing to worry about in this case. 2. An intruder, unathorized person, or other malignant fellow did this on a PC. In this case, I don't feel that the ability to do this is a massive security threat. I think the user needs to be smacked about the head for not password protecting his machine well enough, and needs to prioritize and seriously think about who he's letting access his PC. In my case, I use a nice security lockout program, coupled with the password protected screensaver (both different) to protect my machine when I'm not on it. And nobody gets to my machine anyhow. Paranoid? =) BTW I might add that security lockout program is MOST excellent for leaving on when I leave for work so that when I'm ready to VNC to my machine I can be sure nobody else got to it. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dr Ash Alom" <as...@ne...> To: <vnc...@li...> Sent: Thursday, November 28, 2002 1:54 PM Subject: Re: Hiding the SysTray Icon > Doesn't hiding the ToolTray icon pose a massive security threat? > > > > > > Mavromatidis Haralambos wrote: > > > > To completely disable the icon create a DWORD entry called > > "DisableTrayIcon" and set it to 1 (1 is on and 0 is off) or paste the > > following into a .reg file and import it - the service (or the system) > > will need to be restarted for the setting to go into effect. > > > > > > > > [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORL\WinVNC3] > > > > "DisableTrayIcon"=dword:00000001 > > > > > > > > If you only want to stop someone with meddling with the settings then > > duplicate the above with a registry setting for "AllowProperties" (as > > below): > > > > > > > > [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORL\WinVNC3\Default] > > > > "AllowProperties"=dword:00000001 > > > > > > > > > > > > -----Original Message----- > > From: j d [mailto:mat...@ya...] > > Sent: Wednesday, November 27, 2002 4:29 PM > > To: vnc...@li... > > Subject: Hiding the SysTray Icon > > > > > > > > How can you hide the SysTray Icon (by the clock)?
