Hi Guys For some months now I have been using VNC and then TightVNC for support = purposes over a VERY slow 28.8 LAN / WAN, which will be upgraded Jan/Feb = 2002 a 64K digital link. To test the feasibility, I have used TightVNC extensively on my local = LAN experimenting with various combinations very successfully. Last week = I expanded this to one of the sites I support in an attempt to do as = much support remotely as possible. The reason I waited, was to get = 1.2.2. Which I must compliment Constantin on, as for the first time, I = have been able to accomplish remote support without too many problems = (Line speed!!!). I have found that the "direct" link is too slow to work = on, but using my browser (IE5.5), can connect and do my thing. The = browser link is about 10x faster. Now for the burning questions!!! SSH? Can this be used on a NT4 to NT4 link? If so how? On most of the sites we have a mixture of NT4 SP5/6a, SCO V5.05 and = Slackware 7 (soon to be upgraded to V8). ALL the firewalls are VERY = tight and will only allow know IP's through (this is not a problem, as = the firewalls are custom built - Linux).=20 What I intend, is for each remote workstation (NT4) to be allocated an = individual 58xx and corresponding 59xx port (+- 20 users so port = allocation is not a problem), and run Tight server on each WS setup with = its own port and password with user confirmation. That takes care of the = NT side. To rollout the remote support to SCO and Linux, I do have a problem with = insufficient experience to be able to set up TightVNC server on these = OS's. Also these are live systems and downtime is critical (24x7), I am = very nervous to just get into them and experiment. I have not seen any = SCO related setup queries/answers yet, and there is no compiler. Perhaps = someone has done this already and can give me some idea of the pitfalls = etc., which can save me hours of unnecessary downtime.=20 Linux is a bit easier, as I have access to a Linux boff who is prepared = to help me (At a cost ofcourse!!), and the system can be down, but not = longer than 24 hours. Currently the Linux box is not running a GUI = interface, but will have to be when we upgrade to Slackware 8, as we = will want to do a lot more with Linux to reduce our dependence on = Windose. BTW all the installations so far have been totally standard without any = "tweaking" other than finding the best settings using the standard = options available. Thanks in advance. :-) Rgds Eric =20 Serik Associates Suite 246, P/Bag X6 Cascades, 3202 Su...@se...=20 |
