Well finally got RealVNC 4 installed on three Dell servers with grey 
screen problem.
We have been testing for a week and the problem is fixed no grey screens.
Also as a bonus a notable increase in the display of remote screens .
Downside no File transfer ;-(

Our next move is to install on the various(multiple brands and 
whiteboxes) XP workstations that display the same symptons
