I notice that there are Python modules for manipulating xml files. On the EDIT help menu, choose Python help, then global modules. I reported a problem in trying to install Visual 3.2.9 on Ubuntu 7.10. David Sanders pointed out to me that when I got the message referring to "gtk-config" I should have run that program, which would have told me I needed to install libgtk-dev. I was then able to build 3.2.9. As for building the beta version on Ubuntu 7.10, a couple of people reported a problem with not finding numpy. My best guess is that there were installations of Python 2.5 in both /usr/bin and /usr/local/bin, which apparently can confuse the configure process. It's important to follow these instructions from INSTALL.txt: On Linux, do this: which python Make a note of the prefix preceding /bin/python, typically /usr or /usr/local. (a) If prefix is /usr/local, execute ../visual-x.x.x/configure (b) If prefix is something else, and Visual can go into prefix/lib/python/site-packages, execute ../visual-x.x.x/configure --prefix=prefix (c) If you want to use a different version of Python than the one found with "which python", or (b) is not appropriate, specify both the particular Python and where to install Visual: PYTHON=/somewhere1/bin/python ../visual-x.x.x/configure --prefix=/somewhere2 If "somewhere1" and "somewhere2" are different, you must also add the "somewhere2" directory to Python's module search path. For details, at www.python.org read section 4.1 (Modifying Python's Search Path) in the section Installing Python Modules of the Python on-line documentation. Bruce Sherwood |

As I said in a previous note, after upgrading to Ubuntu 7.10 from an earlier version, I successfully installed python-visual using the package manager but found it to be 3.1.1. I tried to build Visual 3.2.9 from the source package available at vpython.org, but that failes with a problem with pkg-config for gtk+; the error message is "sh: gtk-config: not found", which I don't understand. Next I tried building the beta version from sourceforge. I found I had to use the package manager to install libboost python and thread dev packages, after which I was able to build and run the beta version. Bruce Sherwood |

I upgraded to Ubuntu 7.10. I was shown a sizable list of "obsolete" files that would be deleted, including various boost 1.33 and 1.34 files, which I accepted, although these are needed by Visual. After the upgrade I tried running VPython and got an error message that a boost file was missing, which wasn't surprising. I went to the package manager, found "python-visual", and successfully installed it. However, it's pretty old: 3.1.1; the current production version is 3.2.9. I don't know who builds Ubuntu packages, or how they decide what version of an application to package. I tried building Visual 3.2.9 (the production version for Linux available at vpython.org) but in the configure phase was told there was a problem with pkg-config for gtk+; the error message is "sh: gtk-config: not found", which I don't understand. The problems I reported with VPython on Leopard (clipping plane errors, etc.) aren't due to Leopard after all. I retreated to Tiger (clean install), installed visual-py25, and saw exactly the same set of problems. After searching a bit, I found that other OpenGL applications (notably Second Life) have serious problems with Apple's OpenGL driver for the GeForce 8600M GT graphics card in the MacBook Pro (2.2 or 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo). Apple has not (yet) provided an updated graphics driver. Seems like Macintosh is the machine for "the rest of us" only if we are willing to restrict ourselves to applications starting with "i". On second thought, to keep everything completely up to date even though there's very little difference from 4beta.16 for Linux: There is now a 4beta.20 package for Linux available at sourceforge. Bruce Sherwood |

For Linux, there's almost no difference between beta16 and beta20. What's special about beta20 is that it was built using gtk2 on Windows. This is why there isn't a beta20 compressed source file posted at sourceforge. The only significant change since beta16 as far as Linux is concerned is the file in CVS vpython-core2/src/python/curve.cpp, where there is a correction to permit constructing a curve initially with a single position coordinate. Additional comments: I took my own advice and saw what happens if I turn off graphics acceleration (screen settings > advanced > troubleshoot). Running glinfo.py from the VPython examples one sees that the Microsoft software OpenGL renderer is invoked. When I try to create a sphere, I see a window frame flash briefly and disappear. Only if I increase the hardware acceleration to the point where glinfo.py shows the graphics card's OpenGL renderer active can I create a window and see a sphere. I thought it was supposed to be the case that the software OpenGL engine would produce images, just more slowly than a graphics card would do. Guess that's not the case, or lease not the case with the current beta-version code in VPython. Since you say you've never seen a graphics window with beta**, I assume that means you previously tried beta versions earlier than 20. If so, that's interesting, because there's a significant difference between beta16 and beta 20, which uses entirely platform-independent code except for clock time. What is common to all the beta versions is that much of the display generation is done by the processor in the graphics card. For that reason, it may be useful to update the graphics card driver and see whether that makes a difference. Another possible test is to go to the advanced section of screen settings, choose the Troubleshoot tab, and set hardware acceleration to None, which I think means that all the OpenGL work is done in software rather than in the processor of the graphics card. One of the puzzles about the problems with the beta version(s) on Windows is that the failures differ from one computer to another, even computers that seem quite similar. Thanks for the report. The cursor issue is documented in the summary of new features; cursor manipulation hasn't yet been implemented in the beta version. Even in the production version of VPython there isn't a facility for changing the appearance of the cursor, only making it invisible/visible. Could you please give us a short test program for which the font problem shows up? It wouldn't be a problem with the production version (non-beta). It also wouldn't be a problem with the previous beta version. It is only the very latest beta version 20 for Windows that uses gtk2 (like in the Linux version), and pango is the font-handling subsystem in gtk2. I suppose it is possible that there is some aspect of Windows Me that is the limitation: that's a pretty old operating system. While we are waiting for the aqua version of gtk2 to mature, there is progress on the X11 front: In Mac OSX 10.5, X11 is installed by default. In addition, you don't need to set any DISPLAY environment variable any more, and you don't need to start X11. If you run any X11-based command like vpython from the Terminal.app command line, even remotely over ssh, X11 starts up automatically. -- Martin |

VPython 4.beta20 eliminates almost all Windows-specific code in favor of gtk2, so that the source code for Visual is nearly universal across all platforms (gtk2 was originally developed for creating graphics user interfaces on Unix but has been ported to Windows and Macintosh). This version works at least as well as 4.beta16 but does not address all issues on Windows. The version number was advanced from 4.beta16 to 4.beta20 as a marker that this represents a significant change. New to the Windows beta version: At the top of a graphics window is a new icon to change right-button dragging to "pan" rather than rotate (and another icon to switch back). There are also icons to exit the program, switch to or from full-screen mode, and reset to the original camera position (this reset option is not yet working). History: In late spring of 2006 Jonathan Brandmeyer completed the new version of VPython, with transparency, surface textures, and sophisticated lighting, based on gtk2. However, at that time it became evident that it was extraordinarily difficult to assemble all the components needed for gtk2-based development on Windows, so he wrote some Windows-specific code to substitute for the gtk2 code. In the intervening time, installers that are much easier to use have become available, which made it feasible to return to Brandmeyer's original vision of using one code base for all platforms. The necessary gtk2 run-time components have been bundled into the VPython 4.beta20 installer, so the end user doesn't have to install gtk2. There remain only two small Windows-specific files, wintimer.cpp and winrate.cpp, needed due to the absence on Windows of the gettimeofday routine found on Unix. It has always been the case that gtk2 was available on Mac OSX, that being a Unix-based operating system, but gtk2 connected to the X11 windowing system, which necessitated installing X11. There is a new and rather raw version of gtk2 for the Mac which connects to the native Quartz windowing system, and Steve Spicklemire is trying to build VPython on the Mac using this new gtk2 software. If he succeeds, installation on the Mac could be vastly simpler than it now is. Bruce Sherwood |

The problem seems to boil down to this (in build.log): g++ -I/usr/include/python2.5 -I/usr/local/lib/python2.5/site-packages/numpy/core/include -pthread (snip.....) -I/usr/include/python2.5 -I/usr/local/lib/python2.5/site-packages/numpy/core/include -fpic -DPIC -g -O2 -ftemplate-depth-120 -MMD -MF convex.d -MT "convex.d convex.lo" -c ./python/convex.cpp -fPIC -DPIC -o .libs/convex.o In file included from ../include/python/convex.hpp:12, from ./python/convex.cpp:6: ../include/python/num_util.hpp:68:31: warning: numpy/arrayobject.h: No such file or directory (Due to an infelicity in the autoconfigure machinery, you see "-I/usr/local/lib/python2.5/site-packages/numpy/core/include" not once but twice in the instructions for where to find the numpy includes.) It appears from early in config.log that ${prefix} is /usr, not /usr/local. Here we see Python includes in /usr, but numpy includes in /usr/local. So somehow there's a mismatch, and possibly an error in the autoconfigure files not previously noticed. For starters, I suggest setting --prefix=/usr/local and trying again. I do (still) see problems with VPython on Leopard. Here's the gory detail: My MacBook Pro (Intel core duo, 2.4 GHz, 2 GB of RAM, GeForce 8600M GT (256 MB VRAM)) came with Tiger (10.4). I installed and ran VPython 24 without problems (at least I think there were no problems; I didn't try every example program). I just did a clean install of Leopard (10.5). I installed the version of X11 that came on the DVD; also XCode tools from the DVD. I installed the newest Fink. Using that, I installed VPython2.5, from source. After a struggle to reset X11 key/mouse preferences, and another struggle to reconfigure IDLE, mouse input *mostly* works okay. But: On a number of the sample programs the rendering is wrong. It looks as if the z clipping plane is much too close. These include bounce.py, bounce2.py, gyro.py, gyro2.py, and toroid.py. Parts of the scene are cut off, but become visible as one rotates the camera. In tictac.py, I can't get mouse input to work. If I zoom out, I see an artifact at the bottom of the display. glxgears runs okay (very fast). glxinfo gives a long list of stuff that looks reasonable. (Are there other OpenGL test programs I should try?) In principle this could be a graphics card driver problem; if so I should have seen the same problems on Tiger. I didn't test every sample program, but I think I would have noticed... I am having some trouble installing on Fedora 8. I think its trying to tell me I don't have numpy or numeric, but I definitely do. The build.log and config.log are attached. I got the error while running make. Would creating a symbolic link somewhere fix this? I can confirm these packages are installed... gcc-c++ boost boost-devel gtkglextmm gtkglextmm-devel libglademm24-devel python numpy python-numarray numeric Brad Longo |
