I am using VICE 2.4.18, rev 29455M compiled with --enable-static-ffmpeg and --enable-gnomeui. This version of VICE can be used to record a video using the "Save media file…" command of the "Snapshot" menu. Starting recording works as expected. However, when you stop a recording by pressing the "audio/video recording" button in the status bar, the following message appears in the status bar:

Sound recording stopped…

This is misleading, because VICE just finished recording a video. A better message would be "Video recording stopped" or, if you want to have the same message shared between the "Save media file…" and "Sound recording" commands, it should be something generic like "Media recording stopped".

btw, there is absolutely NO status message message in the windows port. :(
not when it records, and also not once you stop.

Do we care about this anymore? I tried the latest nightly build, but I can't even select any ffmpeg option.

ffmpeg works fine for me, i don't care about the messages. well, there is none in windows, as mentioned.

Well, since the bug was filed under 'Linux', we can close this then. The messages not appearing on Windows is a separate issue, which is unlikely to get fixed. Perhaps once I get far enough with Gtk3 on Windows (unlikely to be soon), this will get fixed then.
