i think the way to create a memory disk on FreeBSD has changed a version or two ago. FreeBSD now manages memory disks with mdconfig: https://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?mdconfig(8)
I haven't had the chance to look through the source, but if you're trying to create /dev/md0 the same way you would on linux, that's probably why its failing.

Here's an example of creating a 1G ramdisk on FreeBSD 12/13

truncate -s 1g disk.img
mdconfig disk.img
newfs /dev/md0
mount /dev/md0 /mnt

    After doing more testing it seems that this might be a cross platform problem. If I create containers natively on FreeBSD they work on FreeBSD, but if I take a container from Windows they fail. I will test with a container created under Linux later today.

    After further testing, it seems that only FAT formated volumes can be opened on FreeBSD. Containers made from Linux/Windows with either NTFS or exFat fail in the way mentioned above.
