I am using veracrypt 1.22.
I have an external harddrive drive which is fully encrypted (not just a single partition).
The drive has been added to system favorite volumes, however it does not work. After reboot drive is not mounted.

What i have checked / tried so far :

  • It's not a password issue (eg : en-US keyboard vs other keyboards) : password on system and is same as external drive and PIM is correct.

  • drive letter is available (I have tried other letters to be sure)

  • "start veracrypt background task" and "Mount system favorite volumes when Windows starts" options are enabled. I have also tried to enable "allow only administrators to view and dismount system favorite volumes in VeraCrypt" option, without success.

  • diskpart : automount is enabled

  • "Hybrid boot and shutdown" option has been disabled (it was on) : doesn't fix the issue

  • In windows event viewer, the following is written :
    VeraCryptSystemFavorites: cannot mount volume \Device\Hardisk1\Partition0
(which indicate the service is working). But there is no detail about why it fails.

  • I have tried to plug the exact same external drive on a Windows 7 machine.
I changed the system password of that windows 7 machine to match the external drive password : it works ! (drive is mounted after boot)
So its definitely a windows 8 issue.

  • For test purposes, I have created a small file container on that windows 8 machine. File container has been encrypted using same password as system and has been added to system favorite volumes : it works perfectly ! (it was mounted after reboot). So problem occurs only with external harddrive and on windows 8.

As explained in the ticket I have disabled "Hybrid boot and shutdown mode" which is just the same thing. Under Windows 8, the checkbox option is named "Turn on fast startup (recommanded)".
