#183 VeraCrypt 3,5 TB Volume with exFAT on MAC can't write data
I have to Problems with VeraCrypt for Mac.
I have buy an new HardDisk with 4 TB.
Now I would link to create a new Container Volume.
INFO: Before I used TrueCrypt wirth my Windows PC.
The Volumen was 2 TB and with the FileSystem NTFS.
This Volumen I can Mound with Veracrypt in TrueCrypt Mode an work fine.
For NTFS i have use Paragon NTFS for Write and works fine to my Mac.
The New HardDisk is an WD My Passport Ultra and Verbatim VERBATIM Store n Go 2,5 4TB USB 3.0 silver Gen 2 – 53224
All Harddisk are Format with File System exFAT with my MAC and the internal Disk Utility.
Copy files and Delete files are work fine.
But now the Problem.
On Mac Creating a Volumen with 3,5 TB with exFAT are Work only until 37% (round a bout 1 TB) and the Creating are verry fast. The next 38% and more are verry slow / do nothing.
When I open the “Activity Monitor“ i see the VeraCrypt App are not Work and the System are hang out.
The Disk Actifity are stopped and the Finish-Time are verry long.
Now i Create this Volumen with an Windows 10 64 Bit with “Cerators Fall Update” and it was in 10 h finish without any Problems.
Now Mount the Volumen on my Mac and it open fine.
Now the 2. big Problem.
Copy Files form My MAC to the Volume it works only short.
First Copy 1 GB work.
Deleting this Test Files are verry Slow and the System not work correct.
Second Copy next 1 GB Files an the MAC are Crashing!
I Can`t Copy the Files and Deleating are Stopp any Acivity form Mac.
I Think the VeraCrypt cant`t handle so big Volumes.
A Test Volumen with exFAT and 10 GB are Working fine.
My MAC: MAC OS X High Sierra Version 10.13.2 (17C88)
Veracrypt Version 1.19 and 1.21, 1.22 beta 3
OSX FUSE for Mac latest Version 3.71

VeraCrypt does not handle the filesystem directly, it only handles low level storage. For this reason, I believe that the issues you are encountering with exFAT are caused by OSX itself and not VeraCrypt.
I will try to do tests on this tomorrow to see if I can reproduce. Meanwhile, can you test the 4TB drive directly without encryption by formatting it with exFAT and copying test files? If it works, this would mean that there is some issue in VeraCrypt side that need to be investigated.

the harddisks all are working fine with exfat on my mac.
Only when i use it with veracrypt to coping files in a Volume are the App stop copy.
The Mac System and veracrypt app and Apple finder are stop working.
I must close veracrypt and finder to work again on my Mac or restart the Mac.

could your Test the Software on Mac?
Did you notice the same mistake with cerate or open Veracrypt Volume (exFAT) 3,5 TB or bigger than 1TB oder 2 TB?
I see on the Sourceforce Website it release the 1.22 BETA 6 for Windows, but no new Beta for MAC.
Only Mac 1.22 BETA 4form December.

Hello,
i test it new with the Veracrypt Mac-Version 1.22 Final but the same Bug.
I can`t create a Volume with 1 TB with Mac OS- Format (not exFat).
See Screenshot: 2018-04-02_18-01-06 it has problem with creating the File at 287 GB.
The File Transfer -Rate stop 1-2 second and restart with 200 MB/s.

On Volume File-Size 61 GB before it run without any stops.
On Windows 10 the Veracrypt old and new Version it runs the Creating an Mount from the Volume at 3,8 TB or smaller without any Problems.
I Think the app have 2 big Bugs in the Mac-Version from VeraCrypt:
Creating Veracrypt Volumes on Mac doesn’t work.
I Think Creating 100 GB must work. See Screenshot bevor with 90 GB it runs without longer Stopps.
Open the Volume are Crashing the Mac Finder.
I Create the Volume with 3,8 TB on Windows 10 with the old and the final VeraCrypt Version 1.22.
When I second delete any Files or copy new Files the Read- or Write Rate only 28 KB and the Finder stop working! “Finder reagiert nicht”
Please help me.

Thank you for your new tests and for sharing these details.
I was not able to do similar test because I was not able to have the
MacOSX machine for the duration needed by the test.
It requires many hours and the MacOSX I have serves also other purposes
(ideally, I should have a machine dedicated to VeraCrypt development but
I can not afford this for now).
Nevertheless, I did a check on the source code and the usage pattern and
I could find any explanation why VeraCrypt would cause such issue.
The most probable reason is that there is some kind of issue in the
OSXFuse module VeraCrypt uses that makes it consume too much memory for
large volume creation and this causes the system to hang.
I can not give you a commitment on when I will be able to replicate the
issue on my side and I will do what I can.

Coud you please test the Bug. It need max. 1,5 hour for create a 1 TB Volume.
I need my new Harddisk with a Veracrypt Volume. With TrueCrypt and NTFS it works but i don´t woudlike to use an old App Technologie without Support.

The problem is that the external 3TB disk I have has a maximum write speed of 30MB/s and so it will take more than 10 hours just for 1TB volume!
You say it works with TrueCrypt but TrueCrypt doesn't support creating exFAT volumes. Matbe you tested it with NTFS which would work with VeraCrypt.
My feeling is that this issue linked to some incompatibility between OSXFuse that VeraCrypt used to create virtual volumes and the way exFAT is implemented in MacOSX.
Anyway, next time I will try to leave the machine running during the night to see if it happens also her.

You only need 1 TB for the test and you will see the VeraCrypt App are freeze.
I have test the latest OSX FUSE Version 3.8.0 but the same Problem.
My Problem is more then 3 month old. Why do you do not fix the bug?

Copying 3x 1 GB Files on the Harddisk an and again 3x 1 GB on Harddisk and VeraCrypt are Freeze and the APP hang. The Complete Mac System and den Finder are stop working.
I must restart my System.
Sould i send you a Harddisk for Testing the Bug on the Mac?
You need only Test Volume with 1,5 TB and any 1 GB or 500 MB Files to copy on the new created Volume. For expample exFAT.

Open the 3,5 TB Volume on MAC with TrueCrypt and VeraCrypt are work.
But the same Problem ever i can only Copy for example 2 GB Files and the App crash. It Freeze the Copy Process are very slow only any KB/s and copy stops. I have to stop the Process and restart the finder also restart the Mac.
I Test it with the FUSE for Mac 3.8.2 final.
Please fix it in coperate with Fuse.

i use it on the old harddisk with a TrueCrypt Volume with the Format NTFS and can Mount it with Veracrypt.
I Create a new VeraCrypt Volume with Format NTFS an 1,5 TB but the same Problem, i cant use it with VeraCrypt on my Mac.
Open work but not copy and delete files. For example 3 Files with 1 GB, 500 GB, 200 MB copy and delete any files and copy new Files. The Veracrypt App and Finder are stop working and i must shut down my Mac and restart.

All the symptoms points towards an issue in the kernek extension provided by OSXFuse. So, it will be diffcult on my side to investigate more since debugging kernel issues like this one is not trivial and it requires specific OSX expertise that OSXFuse team has more than us.
I don't have any special contact withing OSXFuse team so I can not asked them to look into this. Probably the only way is to open a ticket on their Github projet page.
On my side, I have to manage different VeraCrypt priorities within the resource and the time I have and unfortunately for the time being I can not spend time on this issue. Personally, I think the technical analysis of this problem alone should take around 3 to 4 days full time and as you can imagine this is not possible without any compensation and it will most certainly not be helpful because it will probably just confirm that it is an OSXFuse issue.

I have an update: thanks to some special circumstances at work, I was able to get hold on a configuration similar to yours and I was able to do a test under OSX 10.13.5 which revealed no problem.
Here is the configuration I have: 3TB WD external drive formatted with exFAT on which a 2.9 TB file container was created on Windows 10 64Bit (the file container is formated as exFAT as well). Under OSX 10.13.5 with OSXFuse 3.8.0 and VeraCrypt 1.23-BETA0, the 2.9 TB file is mounted and then two large files (6GB and 4.4GB) are copied to the mounted volume. The copy operation took some time but it was successful and there was no hanging of freeze of the system.
Is this configuration indeed similar to yours? If yes, then the issue you are hanving is specific to your machine or disks and not related to osxfuse or VeraCrypt.

I currently create a new Container with your workaround.
Yesterday i test it on a other Mac with same Mac OS, but Fuse 3.82.
With this same Problem but with Mac created Container and NTFS.
For Information the i copy a lot smaller files 2,5 GB and and again this duplicate. Later big files.
now it hang up.

i test the new Volume as i Test it with Veracrypt for Windows.
On Windows i copyed many Pictures and Videos.
The Volumen works fine unter Windows.
Now i test it on an other new MacBook Pro with out any Apps.
Only Pragon NTFS was installed an i have uninstall it for the Test.
Mac OS: High Sierra 10.13.6
Veracrypt: 1.23 Beta0
Harddisk: WD My Passport Ultra USB3.0 4TB 2.5zoll ( But with a Intenso Harddisk it was the Same Problem )
Mount the Volume (2,2 TB) and it display alle Data how i copyed from Windows PC into the Volumen.
For Test i have duplicate the Video Files. First Files are copy, secound Files are stop the Transfer.

The Data on the Harddisk is 23,32 GB. how i copyed from Windows to the Volumen.
Attached you find the Screenshots.
The Problem is when i copy many Files on the Volumen and agin for example duplicate a Videofile it hang it up.

I have made a test similar to you by copying many large files and
performing a duplication many times like you.
At one point, it looked like the copy operation was freezing (stuck at
0) but the machine was not freezed and after waiting 20 minutes, the
copy operations resumed by itself and the files were duplicated correctly.
So, the only thing that I see on my side is that copying many large
files can make the operation stall for long time without freezing the
machine. This is certainly due to buffering done by the OS which
requires a lot of time to flush data to physical disk.
Anyway, it looks like I can not reproduce the issue you have using the
hardware I have in my possession. As this stage, I don't know how I can
help you since it doesn't look to be linked to VeraCrypt.
