    Computer has 3 partitions
Partition 1 - System (boot loader) partition
    Partition 2 - Windows 8.1 OS partition - Encrypted
    Partition 3 - Data partition - Encrypted

OS and Data partitions were encrypted with VeraCrypt 1.22.
I encrypted OS partition (did not use full disk option, but just the OS partition).
    I encrypted Data partition seperately.
I made rescue disk and partition header backups with VC 1.22 with no problems.

A year ago I updated to VeraCrypt 1.23 Hotfix 2
Yesterday I wanted to create another header backup of partition 3.
Everytime I tried I received the following error:

    Problem signature:
    Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
    Application Name: VeraCrypt.exe
    Application Version: 1.23.10.0
    Application Timestamp: 5bbd09dd
    Fault Module Name: msvcrt.dll
    Fault Module Version: 7.0.9600.17415
    Fault Module Timestamp: 54504b2e
    Exception Code: c0000005
    Exception Offset: 0000b4ea
    OS Version: 6.3.9600.2.0.0.256.103
    Locale ID: 1033
    Additional Information 1: 9a01

    Additional Information 3: d276

I backed up data on partition 3 and reformated and encrypted. Still received error.
Unencrypted OS parition 2 and tried to backup header on partition 3. Still received error.
I uninstalled VC 1.23 hotfix 2 and installed VC 1.22.
Backup header of partition 3 now works.
Encrypted OS partition 2 using VC 1.22

I am staying with VC 1.22 until this issue is fixed just in case restore of the header from backup will also fail.
Curious if VC 1.24 beta has a fix for this problem.

    Thanks

    Thank you for this report.
it is surprising to see a crash for such operation and I don't recall a specific change for this in 1.24. I will try to reproduce since your configuration is quit standard and I will let you know.

Thanks for following up on this. If there is any addtional information you need or want me to test let me know. I look forward to a solution in the next release. In the meantime I will remain on version 1.22.

I was not able to reproduce this crash in a machine with similar disk layout so there must be something else in play here.

A memory crash dump would have helped but since there are none, I will need more details:

    • Do you remember at which step the crash occured? There are many steps in header backup and identifying after which step the crash occured will help me narrow down the location.
    • Can you share information about the algorithms used for the Partition 3 (PRF and encryption algo)?
    • Is it possible to know the size of partition 3?

Thank you again for your help.

I suggest you try v1.24 beta 5 use the portable version see if that creates the backup header for partition 3 without problems. Again use the portable version.

By reading your above it appears you have not tried V1.24, you only ask if there is a fix in that version.
